First of all the city associates with "the Orlean's maiden". It is considered that Jeanne d'Arc in 1429, burning with the desire to release the country from English presence and to crown the king, strucked a crushing blow to the opponent here. Jeanne's equestrian statue is installed at the main square of the city. There is Maison de Jeanne d'Arc in Orlean. It'a a copy of a real house where Jeanna stayed for a few days. It was restored in 1965 because the prototype was destroyed during WWII.

Cathedrale Ste-Croix- the typical sample of a "burning" gothic style. The initial cathedral practically was completely destroyed during religious wars. Yhe crowning of Gugo Capeth took place in an old cathedral in 987. The new Cathedral was constructed in XVII century. It has two towers 82 m. You can go upstears to admire a beautiful view from the tower. There is Musee des Beaux-Arts in the northern part of the Cathedral.

Could the teenage Jeanne d'Arc have possibly known from Chateau Chinon what fate awaited her? Injured, sold to the English, imprisoned, she would within 2 years be labeled a 'sorciere' and burned alive in the French town of Rouen (also famous for the infamous carriage ride of Madame Bovary - Flaubert)

One of the highlights of the Loire Valley is Chateau Chambord, an imposing Renaissance structure built in the 16th century by Francois I. It contains 440 rooms and 365 chimneys, one for every day of the year! Within the structure one finds the striking double-spiral staircase thought to be designed by Leonardo de Vinci whom Francois lured from Italy in his last years.
This chateau was originally built as a hunting lodge by the king, who wanted to have the local river rerouted to serve his dwelling. When it was determined by engineers to be too vast an adventure, Francois abandoned the idea.

    Chateau Chinon
It's here that the courageous 17 year old Jeanne d'Arc visited the dauphin, Charles VII in 1429 and convinced him to place her in charge of the French troops against the English in the 100 Years War. If you haven't watched the movie, you're missing something. This is the Great Hall where, disguised in a crowd, Jeanne miraculously picked him out and won his favor.

The beautiful Chateau Chenonceau rests across the river Cher. It's here that Diane de Poitier, known as the Huntress, would bath daily in the cold waters. Intelligent, educated and charming, she served as governess to the young Henri II until his father, Francois I traded him to Spain for his own freedom after his capture.
