In this vast cemetery there are buried 116,628 French, German and Polish dead from WWI and WWII. It is only one of 19 such graveyards in the Champagne area.
We stopped to remember all those who died wandering from the French section where we had entered, through the German and the Polish. Individual graves and ossuaries in each section with the remains of the thousands unidentified.
We went to look for the Books of rRemembrance said to be found in a closed but unlocked safe in one of the pillars at the entrance. To our horror we found an official Notice telling us that the Books had been vandalised, descrated and removed to the Town Hall for restoration and future safe keeping.
No better warning is required that monsters of evil and depravity still live amongst us.
