Notre-Dame de Reims (Our Lady of Reims) was built between 1211 and 1275 on the alleged site of the baptism of Clovis by Saint Remi in AD496. This cathedral is where the kings of France were crowned. The Germans bombed the cathedral in 1917 during WWI, it sustained major damage, restoration was funded in part with grants from the Rockefeller family. My favorite part of the cathedral are the beautiful striking blue stained glass windows by Russian artist Marc Chagall who was commissioned to create them in the early 1970s. One of the windows depicts the principal events in the lives of Abraham and Christ, another window shows the tree of Jesse, the lineage of the Kings of Judah, and the third window shows momentous events in the lives of the Kings of France including the coronation of King Charles VII in front of Joan of Arc and the baptism of Clovis by Saint Remi. Open from 7:30-19:30 every day Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. Leave a Comment

St. Remi's basilica by Dabs St. Remi's basilica is an UNESCO World Heritage site located away from the center of town. If you have a nice day it is about a one mile walk from the center near Notre-Dame de Reims. Saint Remi is named for the 5th century Saint Remi, patron saint of the inhabitants of Reims and dates back to the 11th century with additions made in later centuries. Like Notre-Dame, it sustained heavy damage in WWI and was restored following the war. Next to the basilica is the abbey, which was the Royal Abbey of St Remi. The present abbey building dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries and is open as the Saint-Remi Museum We visited at the end of the day and the basilica was not well lit on the interior so try to go earlier in the day. Veuve Clicquot boutique by Dabs There are 11 champagne houses that you can visit in the vicinity of Reims (info from brochure at the tourist office). Some are by appointment only and others you can show up at the appointed time. I chose to visit Veuve Clicquot, having just enjoyed their champagne at a recent holiday party. Visits to Veuve Clicquot are by appointment only. I emailed them to get a reservation on an English language tour and received a prompt reply confirming our reservation. Veuve Clicquot is located at 1, place des Droits de l'Homme, a fair distance from the center of town (around the tourist office and Notre Dame), close enough to St. Remi's to walk. We took a taxi to get there but walked back as we had ample time before our train back to Paris. See my travelogue for some more pictures and a virtual tour through the cellars. Leave a Comment

Palais du Tau by Dabs Another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Reims, the Palais du Tau was built between 1498 and 1509 and was used by the kings for their coronations. It was here that the kings dressed before the coronation and where they held lavish banquets afterwards. The last coronation and royal banquet was for Charles X who was crowned in 1825. The name Tau comes from the shape of the palace which resembles a "T", tau in Greek. Like the Notre-Dame Cathedral nearby, it was also damaged in WWI and restored following WWII. The palace is now a museum containing such exhibits as statues and treasures from the Cathedral, Flemish tapestries and royal attire from coronations of French kings. Leave a Comment

ANCIENT WINE CAVES..... by eden_teuling CHAMPAGNE!!!!! Don't we always associate this word with FESTIVITIES, PARTIES, SPECIAL OCASSIONS and HAPPINESS?? REIMS is in the HEART of the region CHAMPAGNE AND YES, THIS IS THE PLACE where the grapes grow and ripen and become the famous CHAMPAGNE we all love so very much. Each year 150,000 people visit the TAITTLINGER caves in REIMS. These caves, situated under the during the FRENCH REVOLUTION destroyed Abbey Saint-Nicaise, were dug during the GALLO-ROMAN period and enlarged during the 13th Century by the monks, who kept their CHAMPAGNE there. The monks owned vineyards and traded in CHAMPAGNE...... Nice to see all these bottles with their "kicks", which we call "ziel". This is the hole at the bottom of the bottle. There are guided tours through these caves from 1st March - 30th November each day and from November till March only on weekdays. The guids speak several languages so I would recommend this tour to everyone.......also because you will want to taste some champagne, won't you? So special to taste it at the place where the grapes grew in cold Spring, hot Summer and colourful Autum, to rest during the icy Winter! Very special is the façade à fronton de la cour d'honneur. There is also a wonderful GRAND ESCALIER, a majestic flight of stairs where you can see a portrait of the young KING LOUIS XVth. In the picture you see the CHAPTER HOUSE (17th & 18th Century) which is in the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE LIST! The Abbey has remains that date back to the Middle Ages, which is very special and very worthy of your visit! You will enjoy it. The Abbey is situated a few 100 meters away from the CATHEDRAL. the goliath - a 8 meters statue from the cathedral by mariev, 4 more photos The former Reims' archiepiscopal palace, the Palais du Tau, has been classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The site used to be the Reims' archbishop place since the 5th century, firsts a Gallo-Roman villa until the 7th century. Later rebuilt with the present shape in the Xth century. The name comes from the plan of the building, which looks like the letter tau (T) in the Greek alphabet. The oldest remaining part is the chapel, from 1207. The building was largely rebuilt in gothic style in the 16th century and, again, modified in a baroque style in the 17th century. The palace hosted of the kings of France before their sacre and coronation in Notre-Dame : The king was dressed for the coronation at the palace before the ceremony and a banquet was held there after. The first documented coronation banquet was in 990, and the most recent in 1825. It is a museum since 1972, showcasing statuaries and tapestries from the cathedral, also reliquaries and other religious objects associated with the sacre of the kings of France. The best thing is to couple the Palais du Tau's visit with the cathedral's, to see the both the original statues (in the museum) and the copies (in situation). Open from September 9 to May 5, from 9h30 to 12h30 and 14h to 17h30 from May 6 to September 8, from 9h30 to 18h30 Price : 6.50€ Audio guides are available at the tourism office. Jeanne D'Arc, Maid of Orleans by dinhyen During the Hundred Years' War between England and France, Joan of Arc, Jeanne D'Arc in French, inspired and rallied France to eventual victory. In 1429, she brought Charles VII, the Dauphin, to Reims to be coronated. She was tried as a witch and burned at the stake by the English in 1431. Almost 500 years later, she was canonized as a saint. An equestrian statue next to the Cathedral commemorates France's heroine. Writing this is making me think of the song "Joan of Arc" by OMD. Leave a Comment
