Castellane Champagne House

by markyg

In Epernay there are dozens of champagne houses, many of which are situated along the Avenue de Champagne. We visited Castellane as it was a larger champagne house, but not as well known as say Moet (a vast majority of the champagnes in the region never are sold outside of France). We were taken on a tour of the Castellane house, shown how they make champagne and walked the cavernous cellar. The house also has a tower that provides a wondeful view of the region. At the end of the tour we sampled several different champagnes and learned about the different types. The cost of the tour was only a few euro. I would definitely recommend visiting this house and taking the tour to learn about champagne, but the following website also provides some good information on champagne and the different houses: http://www.intowine.com/champagne.htmlTours typically end by 3 so plan on going early.

Piper-Heidsieck Tour

by AmsterKetti

A good tour for those interested in a more "Disneyland style" approach to champane tours. Value for the money, but not as personal as visiting a no-name champagne house, where the bubbly is affordable and tasted much better then Piper (sorry!) Still, good fun!

Laser Guided Train

by freya_heaven

Once out of the lift and settled on to the Laser Guided Train which takes us through some of the 47 tunnels which make up a total of 18km of cellars! A guide joins us and provides an entertaining commentry. Most wines and champagnes are "riddled" (turned around) by machine these days, as in the photo, these are turned once a day. This is done to capture the yeast which settles in the bottles, gradually the bottles are made horizontal once the deposit has settled at the neck of the bottle. This takes 6 - 8 weeks, then the neck of the bottle is out in a -20 degree bath to trap and remove the deposit. Clever stuff! There are still two full time human riddlers who work here, they riddle the most expensive champagne which is kept locked away.

Orient Express

by freya_heaven

Mercier Champagne House has a private rail line connected to the Paris line. on the day of your tour they were expecting passangers from the Orient Express to arrive in a beautifully decorated area of the cellers. Unfortunately the photo didnt come out well.Jacques Mercier, the grandson of Eugene, organised a "Champagne Rally" in 1950. It was held through the 18km of cellars as a publicity stunt. Amazingly not 1 bottle was broken as the cars raced through!

Let The Tour Begin....................

by freya_heaven

The tour takes a very interesting 45 minutes, starting with a film on a large panoramic screen about the history of Mercier Champagne and the life of the fascinating Eugene Mercier himself who died in 1904. When he died the business was passed on to his son in law. From here you then taken 30 meters underground in a glass sided lift going past scenes of the World Exhibition, and champagne making.

The Mercia Barrell

by freya_heaven

The huge Vat which meets you as you walk in the entrance of the Mercia Champagne House took 16 years to build and can hold the equivalent of 200,000 bottles!Eugene Mercier travelled to Hungary to choose the wood himself, from 150 oak trees and was completed in 1881.The barrel was taken to the World Exhibition in Paris. It took 8 horses and 24 oxen to transport the 20 ton vat, and took 8 days to do the relatively short journey. Because some of the streets were so narrow, in places Eugene Mercier purchased the buildings obstructing the vats journey and demolished them!!Once at the Great World Exhibition, to get publicity Mercier put on free balloon flights for the people of Paris. Quite an eccentric chap!

Champagne Views

by freya_heaven

The countryside of Champagne is not dramatic but very picturesque, endless rolling hils, covered in vine yards and small villages only broken up by the occassional windy road and champagne house. The three largest towns in the region are Reims which is the Champagne administration centre and largest city, Troyes, and Epernay which is the true Champagne (the drink) capital of France.

Roses & Vines

by freya_heaven

It is very common to see rose bushes at the end of the rows of grape vines. Roses can be particularly susceptible to disease both fungal and insect. So if one of the rose bushes looks as if it is struggling it is a warning sign that they need to check out the vines in that area to see if any treatment is needed.
