    Gelada Baboon at Besancon citadel
    1 more image

Favorite thing: Part of the Museum and focused on teaching, the Zoo highlights the conservation of endangered animal species especially the big cats (lions of Asia, Siberian tigers), primates (marmosets, tamarins, lemurs, gibbons, colobus. .. more than 25 species in total) and birds (thirty aquatic species and tropical).
They also have some stuff I was more familiar with, such as the macropods (kangaroos and wallabies), various species of herbivores and livestock in the Farm Maid .
Around 400 animals (over 70 species) live in spacious enclosures and open vegatated areas.

Fondest memory: However, there's one animal that everyone who visits the citadel never forgets. It's such a shock when you've come to see a masterpiece of Vauban's handiwork that you find yourself walking across a moat style area and there, immediately below you, are the rare and endangered Gelada baboons.
They may be grooming one another, having a squabble or climbing the seemingly unclimbable walls. Whatever they're doing, you'll never forget them and will pause to have a look; I guarantee it.

    Besanon

Favorite thing: After a nice lunch by the river we climbed to the top of the hill overlooking the town. There was a great view of Besancon and the surrounding regions. I also remember there was a Castle at the top of this hill but as the entrance fee was 30F and we were still poor students, we had to forgo a visit. Next time!

    Geography of Franche-Comté:...

    Favorite thing: Geography of Franche-Comté:

    Situated in the central Europe
    at the river Saône
    at the Jura Mountains
    The important towns of Franche-Comté:

    Besançon (Capital of Franche-Comté)
    Montbéliard
    Belfort
    Vesoul
    Dôle
The Franche-Comté Region is the region where there is the most number of trees, in other words, greenery in France. Almost all the 'Boites des Fromages' Cheese boxes are made and produced in this region. There is also a large number of forests and parks here.

Go yatching in Summer time. The DOUBS river, the Rhône au Rhin, and especially the Saône river is a great adventure by 320 km of navigation! Cool. :)
