  • Walk the walls of the Citadel

    Besançon Things to Do

A great thing to do in the Citadel is to go up and walk along the two rampart walks on the tops of the walls.According to the Citadel’s website, these walks are almost 600 meters long (that’s about 650 yards, for those who are still heroically resisting a switch to the metric system), 5 to 6 meters wide (16 to 20 feet) and 15 to 20 meters high (49...

Doubs (pronounced "dew") is an important part of Dole even today. • The West and South Side of the Church

    Ronchamp Things to Do

On the West side of the church there is an outside pulpit. On the south side there is some shrubbery while on the west side is the nave area of the church but it is difficult to make it all correspond to a conventional church. For instance we think there is a Gargoyle (?) at the top of the South side.

by pedroswift Updated Oct 23, 2010

It was our pleasure to eat at the Hotel de la Marine, Ranchot on a very cool evening in May 2010. We had moored at the nearby quay on the Canal du Rhone au Rhin after four hours motoring from Dole in rather wet and chilly weather. The fireplace at la Marine was more than enough to invite us to forgo the shipboard life to be waited upon and fed by hands other than our own.
I have voiced my admiration for Logis de France Restaurants elsewhere in reviews on VT, so it’s no surprise I had no hesitation in taking our boating guests to this establishment.
The warmth of the welcome at the bar from the proprietor and some of the locals drinking there got the night off to a good start and we hardly hesitated when offered a drink.
After aperitifs, we took our seats in the restaurant which turned out to be well decorated with windows and door on three sides that would no-doubt make for pleasant dining areas during summer. This was not our priority of course – room temperature was.
La Marine offered several fixed price menus (€17, €23, €27) plus a more than adequate carte. Two of us chose items from the carte while two selected the €27 menu giving four courses (choice of four dishes each course except the cheese).
    The carte offers –
eight entrée (starters) choices (€7 to €13) – the most expensive being Foie gras maison cuit au Macvin au torchon.
Six meat/poultry choices and three fish choices for mains. €12 to €16 – dearest being steak with either pepper or morbier (cheese) sauce.
There are nine desserts on offer (€ 4-6). Children and vegetarians are catered for.
The Carte de Vins is adequate but we chose to try Jura wine and selected a Savagnin dry white table wine which was a change from the well known grape varieties.

Favorite Dish: Everyone enjoyed their meals immensely. My navigator had prawn bisque for starter – followed by poulet fermier aux Morilles et vin jaune - then two local cheeses – finishing with glace pistache (ice cream). Voted her meal top notch. We would have to try very hard to cook anything nearly as good on the boat. Total bill for four include pre-dinner drinks came to €123.

By the way the “vin jaune” mentioned with the chicken is a Jura speciality and not to be missed during your wine tastings in Jura. Try the other style wines made from Savagnin.

    Château-Chalon Local Customs

The “Vin Jaune” (the name means “Yellow Wine”) is made with the grapes of “Savagnin” harvested later than usual, and is aged in oak barrels for 6 years and 3 months. The wine is then embattled in a special kind of bottle called Clavelin (62 cl.) that’s specially made for it.While ageing in the oak barrel, part of the wine evaporates because of the...

    Gray Things to Do

Strolling around the narrow alleys of the old town had been interesting. Somewhere I've read that it's pituresque but I wouldn't say so, there were too many semil-derelict houses. Nevertheless there are also pretty houses, and we discovered a nice statue (I think it was of Pierre Fourier, a saint that died in Gray) and even a half-timbered house....
