Avignon

by traveldave

The Holy See was based in the city of Avignon between 1309 and 1377, after Pope Clement V fled political turmoil in Rome. During the time Avignon was the home of the Roman Catholic Church, seven French-born popes ruled from the city.Avignon's most notable attraction is the Pont d'Avignon, more properly called the Pont Saint-Bénézet, made famous by the French nursery rhyme, Sur le Pont d'Avignon. The 2,953-foot (900-meter) bridge was constructed in about 1350. All but four of its original 22 spans were washed away during a flood in 1669.

Orange

by traveldave

The Provençal village of Orange has nothing to do with the color or the fruit. Instead, it derives from Arausio, the Celtic name for the area. Orange was colonized by Caesar's Second Gallic Legion in 35 B.C. There are many Roman ruins in and around Orange, including this amphitheater, called the Théâtre Antique, which is still used today for concerts and plays. It has a seating capacity of 10,000, and is considered the best-preserved Roman amphitheater in the world. Its stage wall, the only such Roman structure still surviving in its entirety, is 337 feet (103 meters) wide and 121 feet (37 meters) tall. The statue represents Emperor Augustus, who was born in Orange.

Menton

by traveldave

The French Riviera, or the Côte d'Azur, as the area is called in France, is dotted with small picturesque villages, such as Menton. Known for its lemon trees (and a lemon festival), Menton is a lovely village of about 29,000 that is right on the French-Italian border, which is within walking distance.Once part of Monaco, Menton declared itself a free city under the protection of Sardinia in 1848. After an 1860 plebiscite, it passed to France. Due to its proximity to Italy, and the fact that it was once under Sardinian control, Menton's architecture and atmosphere are more Italian than French.

Aailability of medicaments..

by cochinjew

I am a medical doctor who often visit Paris. and I am pleasantly surprised at the incorporation of Homeopathy by the allopathic MDs. Even specialists prescribe homeopathic medications and they are available without prescription as well, but with prescription they are covered by the state or private insurance. Osteopath in France is more like Chiropractor but the orientation is very different, was impressed with the one i observed. France is a little bit more aware of dangers of chemicals than the USA.. so many medications with dubious value are offered homeopathic alternatives, and I am also impressed with their efforts not to use parabens in their cosmetics...Niacin is very helpful in one particular situation, that is hypertriglyceridaemia, after you get used to the flushing. I occasionally work in a Social Medicine Clinic (believe it or not there are such things in USA where patients...

Weather forecasts - France

by breughel

On the VT travel forum a repeated question is that of the weather to be expected on a planned trip. For FRANCE I use www.france.meteofrance.com where I can see the 7 days previsions. It is in French but it is illustrated and easy to understand. Under "Climat" one can find the weather observations for the past years so that one knows what can be statistically expected at the time of the planned visit.Another reliable forecast is that of the French television FRANCE 2 http://meteo.france2.frNext to those specific country weather forecasts, I often use specialized web sites like www.weather.com or meteo123.com with 10 days weather forecast and weather statistics. They are easy to use because in English and cover all countries. My only reproach is that they are sometimes less accurate than the national weather forecast organisations (I have seen that several times for France). At longer term...
