FRENCH SYMBOLS

by vinc_bilb

Nationnal...- Flag: blue, white, red, the colours are those of Paris (blue and red) + royal (white) (1789)- Anthem: the Marseillaise (1792)- Motto: "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity". - National day: Bastille Day =14th July (1789) - French republic: Marianne, wearing a Phrygian cap or Roman goddess Liberty or Liberté. - Animal: French Cockerel (christian symbol of vigilance since the New Testament)(Origin: a joke, a pun in roman between gallus (Cockerel) and Gallus (Gaul)Food : (it is impossible to quote a national dish because each of 26 French regions has its specialities), the emblematic could be in my view the foie gras (Southwest); the baguette of bread; the Camembert cheese; the frog's legs - wine (Bordeaux, Bourgogne, Champagne, Alsace, etc.); Some of the French symbols are obsolete (like a french man with beret, newspaper and baguette, smoking a "gauloise" in a bistrot), part of a...

DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH? PARDON?

by vinc_bilb

It's true: while most people in France have studied English, they are often unable or unwilling to use it: lack of practice, or fear that their English will sound ridiculous, most of the time. Please note that British English, spoken with the carefully articulated "received pronunciation", is what is generally taught in France; thus, other accents may be understood with difficulty, if at all. Try to speak clearly and slowly, using your best ""received pronunciation".Don't forget:- That most of the French people will really appreciate any attempts you do to speak French, even if you are wrong.- Use the formal form (Vous) by default instead of the informal (Tu)PS: picture from http://www.cartoonmuseum.org/

Web site: viamichelin (english)All photos from the web site (real cases as exemples):- Photo 1: Paris, activating the "Tourism" menu- Photo 2: Grenoble interactive map, with Hotels, Restaurants, Tourism attractions, Traffic camera display activated

MAKE SOMEBODY HAPPY ?

by vinc_bilb

(tittle inspiration: Santanna's brothers song)1. A good start: bonjourThe French are attached to politeness and should react coolly to strangers that forget it. Addressing your hellos/goodbyes in return to everyone when you enter or leave small shops and cafes is appreciated. Starting the conversation with at least a few basic French phrases, or some equivalent polite form in English, is a good way to convince Frenchs to try and help you. "Excusez-moi Monsieur/Madame": Excuse me "S'il vous plait Monsieur/Madame" : Please "Merci Monsieur/Madame" : Thank you "Au revoir Monsieur/Madame" : Good ByeWord replacement for Good morning/afternoon/bye... : "Salut" (hello: slightly informal, for close acquaintances) Use the formal "vous" by default until invited to say "tu". Always use the "vous" form to a law enforcement officer (or other person of authority). A good work-around is to still use...

Aix En Provence

by kat-m

A bit far from Nice, but we did fly from Marseilles and so on our return did a special visit. Well worth a visit, this is a beautiful little town. full of little cobbled streets and very traditional. The town has provided little electric buses which seat about 5 people and for 1 euro you can jump on and off at your leisure. After driving the whole of the cote de azure that day we were a bit tired however and managed to get ourselves lost. And so time was wasted and did not see as much as we would have liked. The thing I liked most about France were the views to the sea and the traditional houses and buildings, also a lot cleaner than here in britain.

Fois Gras

by Rupanworld

Foie Gras is a typical French cuisine delicacy that is prepared from fattened goose or duck liver. Foie gras implies the liver of a duck or a goose that is specially fattened by gavage. It is buttery and soft and a very rich food and tastes quite different from an ordinary duck or goose liver. It is sold in various forms like the whole liver, or in the form of mousse or pâté (like a paste) and can be found in all types of stores starting from supermarkets to restaurants. It is generally served with bread, toast or steak as an accompaniment, but can be definitely eated sole as well. I found the taste of foie gras excellent beyond any description. And I believe, a person travelling to France should definitely try it once.
