General Paris

by Suet

If you want cheap travel within Paris you need to buy an orange carnet for one month from the metro for each person. This allows as much travel as you like on both bus and metro and RER which is light rail train. You will need to check but you might be able to use them on a day trip to Versailles to see the Palace which is well worth it. So many places to see and so much to do in Paris, you may not want to leave!Budget eating is having a sandwich from the street vendors, carrying your own water bottle or looking for the Formule meals at lunchtime and evening in the cafes. Sadly, they DO have McDonalds in Paris if your children are desperate for junk food. Best budget is to make yourselves and the children packed lunches for day trips. If the kids have back packs, these are popular for carrying food and teenagers are always hungry it seems!I found Hotel Ibis to be clean and comfortable...

Planning Makes It happen The Way You Want It

by Adagio1

A lot depends on how you are travelling. Do you have your own transport? Are you travelling alone? What interests you specifically? What sort of budget or standards are you applying? All these answers will help us give you better advice.Think before you go "What is going to give me the most satisfaction" . Once you have established that all other matters are subservient to that prime requirement. To really enjoy France immerse yourself into the countryside and provincial villages if you want the genuine French atmosphere. La Dolce Vita is easily found if that is all you want. The winding D roads in Autumn with charming little villages every few kilometres. Completing a day's scenic drive with a momentous meal and good wine.

Mirielle Mathieu - French chanteuse

by Elodie_Caroline

When I was very very small, there used to be this wonderful French song played on the radio, even now I can remember the tune and some of the words to it, although I haven't heard it for years. The songstress was, Mirielle Mathieu. My brother, Paul, who was very small then too, even had a crush on this petite French woman with the basin cut hairstyle.I had kind of forgotten about this woman with a voice like an angel, then one night a couple of years ago (2004) I was watching a French film, set in the mid 1960s called, 'Bon Anée' (Happy new year). It was about a French criminal who was planning to rob the jewellers in town. Anyway, in one of the early scenes, this man went to visit this bar where some transvestites were doing a kind of Karaoke thing; straightaway I recognised the beautiful voice one of them was miming too... it was Mirielle Mathieu! And blow me down if I wasn't right and...

Madame Bovary - French Literature

by Elodie_Caroline

Gustave Flaubert's French novel, 'Madame Bovary,' was edited and released as 16 separate installments in the French newspaper, "Revue de Paris," starting 1st October and finishing on 15th December 1856.I have seen this on film once and did start reading the book a while ago. Here is what I can remember from the story:.The story is of a woman who is desperate for love and obviously fantasises about the man of her dreams. She ends up marrying a man who is a good man and much older than her, but he's not what she'd hoped a husband would be. She eventually feels trapped and in need of a man who will take her to her highest passions, she meets him, in the guise of a happy go lucky count. She embarks upon a passionate affair with him and he offers to take her away from everything, of course she is willing to go. But, the count has no money and he doesn't think that he can do her justice by...

Vive la France... Paris

by venenorojo

What may I say about France? The language is still a bit difficult for me (I always mix it up with Spanish), but I love the food. Paris is one of the most expensive cities I know, but it's still one of the most beautiful cities I have seen. Don't miss the Louvre, le Centre Pompidou and the district Montmatre with my favourite place to be in Paris the wonderful cathedral Sacre Coeur!

Rennes

by Goner

Rennes is the largest city in the Brittany Region of France (Bretagne in French) with nearly a quarter of a million inhabitants. It sits strategically on the convergence of the Viaine and the Ille Rivers. Rennes is a good base for visiting the region of Brittany as many trains arrive from Paris each day, plus nearly any part of Brittany can be reached from here within a two-hour drive. Rennes has two universities and many hi- tech factories. Due to a fire in 1720 that lasted six days, only a small portion of it’s medieval section is left. There is a section built after the fire dating in the 18th century with half-timbered buildings lining the narrow streets. Take a look at the Hotel de Ville on Place de la Maure, I think it’s a beautiful building. The Palais de Justice - Rennes’ law courts, built in 1618-55 still stood after the fire with parts of building being used until it was...

Paris

by traveldave

Paris was founded when the Parisii tribe established a fishing village on L'Île de la Cité in the middle of the River Seine. The village was conquered by the Romans in 55 B.C., and they called the town Lutèce. Under the Romans, Lutèce spread to what is now the Left Bank, and became one of the most important and strategic settlements in northern France. The Romans lost Lutèce to the Franks, who renamed the town Paris and made it the center of their kingdom.During the Middle Ages, Paris became a religious center. It also gained a reputation as a center of learning, drawing scholars from all over Europe to its great university of the Sorbonne. Paris later became a center of culture and ideas during the Renaissance. Under King Louis XIV, it became one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe. France's rule by monarchy ended with the bloody Revolution of 1789, which started in Paris...

keeping an eye on things

by Maeker

France is an extremely beautiful and diverse place. my favorite thing about it has to be the ambiance of sitting outside in a caffe and watching people. of course, this is my favorite thing about most places. i really enjoyed the museams the museam de' orsey was my favorite. my wallet was pick pocketed in monte carlo the night before i was to travel to paris. i woke up the morning of my low fare flight only to find i had no wallet. i proceeded to panic and woke all up in my hostel. i was lent the money to get to the airport. once i arrived in paris, i had on ly 7 euro in my pocket. i was supposed to be picked up by a friend who never showed. i knew roughly where she lived. i had a choice to make. i could spen the remaining euro on a phone card or i could by a ticket to her stop. i bought a ticket. once i arrived in her neighborhood i tried to borrow a phone to use to call her, but noone...

Speaking French

by mileslunn

The French have developed a reputation of refusing to speak English even if they know it. This is largely not true, although some who speak English may refuse to speak it not because they are trying to be rude, but because they are not very good at it and fear they may say the wrong things. One can get by with English only in Paris and the French Riviera, but knowledge of French is definitely an asset if going elsewhere. Most are not too familiar with the Quebecois accent, so if from Quebec, speak slowly. In addition understanding them at conversational speed may be difficult for those with only basic knowledge, so simply say reponde lentement s'il vous plait.
