Deauville-les-Bains

by Carmanah

Deauville wasn't really a town (or to be specific, a commune) we had much time to explore. We arrived there on a late afternoon after spending most of the day visiting WWII-related sites elsewhere in Basse-Normandie. We checked into our hotel (the Hotel Ibis) and ate dinner at the hotel. I remember really enjoying our dinner (liver pate on crusty French bread, creamy seafood pasta), even though I was never much of a fan of pate before. After our dinner, we all wandered down to the beach nearby. As our teachers babbled on about the famous Grand Casino (which we never entered but was apparently inspiration for James Bond Casino Royale), a bunch of girls started to sing the Disney Lion King theme song and UB40's Red Red Wine at the top of their lungs. Some of them jumped into the ocean and I took a picture as the sun set behind the English Channel.

Honfleur, Basse-Normandie

by Carmanah

We woke up to a cold, grey, October morning and left our Deauville hotel very early. Before getting too comfy on board our tour bus, we arrived 20 minutes later in the sleepy port commune of Honfleur.Honfleur sits at the mouth of the Seine river and is small but historic and easy to explore on foot. This tiny town has been inspiration for many of France's famous modernist painters, such as Courbet and Monet. This was one reason why dropped by, for within the next few days we'd visit Monet's garden in Giverny, and we'd also visit some art galleries in Paris, like the Musée d'Orsay and the Louvre, which both feature these artists' works. What's also interesting is that Honfleur was associated ever so slightly with Canadian history. Since we were essentially one big social studies class, our teachers would emphasize any Canadian historical content that they could. So apparently Jean Denis,...

Go to Provence and Cote...

by polinia

Go to Provence and Cote d'Azur. You can stay in Nice, Cannes, Sant-Tropez or explore small villages up in the hills. Those villages are called 'Villages Perches' and they are charming, romantic and full of history. It's likevisiting an antique shop. Village of Eze is something special. I've read about this place on the VT pages and while staying in Nice I couldn't miss it. It exceeds my expectations. It should be regarded as an open museum. I also liked other villages like Gordes and Rousillion.

Cleaning Ladies

by Arial_27

You'll find that most middle -class households in France have a "femme de menage" ( a cleaning lady, or maid) that comes to clean their house about one to three times a week. Where I come from, only very wealthy families, if any, have maids but it is quite common among all families here. If you're staying in somebody's home for a longer period of time, make sure you're aware of the duties of your cleaning lady. My house mother would tell me, "You must clean your room because the cleaning lady's coming soon!" (Huh?) The purpose of the cleaning lady is not to tidy up your belongings, organize your things or do dishes! Their responsibilities often include the duties in the home that most people never get around to doing- like washing the walls, cielings, mirrors, mopping the floor, sanitizing the sinks and the bath, etc. Anything you don't want the cleaning lady to see, tuck away into a...

Versailles

by sim1

After a few days in Paris, I concluded my trip to this city with a visit to Versailles. I was feeling tired from walking a few days after each other in Paris, trying to absorb as much as I could of the city. My feet were hurting quite bad by now, but that didn't stop me from visiting Versailles. I always dreamed of seeing Versailles one day, and here I was!My first excitement of being at Versailles tempered quite quickly when I got inside. The rooms were beautiful decorated, almost "too" beautiful. Not a patch was left untouched, it was all gold plattered, sculputered and there were decorations all over. The rooms themselves were quite empty, and the furniture was displayed behind a cord. The cord was important to stop the hundreds of tourist coming to close to those precious items. And that was where it went wrong for me.....To tell the story in short.... it was way too crowded for...

Family Hols. in France

by barryg23

I have little memory of first two trips abroad. In 1980, we went to the Algarve in Portugal or so I've been told. A few years later we visited London but I've no memory of that trip either. A holiday to France in 1986 is the first foreign trip I do actually remember. We took the ferry from Ireland to Wales, drove from there to Weymouth, and then boarded the ferry to Cherbourg (no Ryanair in those days!). We stayed in St. Nazaire, a small town near Nantes, on the Western coast of France.

Learning about French Music

by barryg23

When I Worked in an Irish pub in Angouleme the boss insisted we always played Irish music as he was sure it kept the customers happy. However when he was away we could “experiment” and I can remember what a relief it was being able to switch off the Dubliners or the Corrs and listen to some proper French music. One of our regular customers left us a few CDs and that summer I became acquainted with Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf and George Brassens. I had never really heard much French music before but it quickly grew on me and whenever I hear it now it wakes me back to that summer in France.

Inter-railing summer 2000

by barryg23

I enjoyed one of the best holidays of my life in June/July 2000 when I went inter-railing with my then-girlfriend for a month around France. We had both just finished our final University exams in Dublin and the trip was a reward for a long few years of study. We started and finished in Paris and in between visited many parts of the country. Some of the highlights from this trip were:Relaxing on the beaches in the south of FranceExploring the beautiful Swiss border town of Annecy Watching France win Euro 2000 in a bar in PoitiersVisiting Bordeaux during a wine festival
