Lac Champos, Charmes-Sur-L'Herbasse

by b1bob

Charmes Sur L'Herbasse is France's answer to Virgilina, Virginia. I stayed here with my French pen friend Luc in the summers of 1989 and 1990 after my studies in Nice and Madrid. I was here at the 200th Bastille Day celebration when the Faculté des Lettres took a long weekend of holiday. I returned after my studies were over. The following year, I spent another week there. Luc's mama cooks very well (I still remember the truffle omelette and I have her stuffed tomato recipe on my personal web site) and it was educational speaking French with in a real-life family setting. Every so often, Luc and I (sometimes his mama would go with us) to Lac Champos. It is a manmade recreational lake like Westhaven in Mechanicsville, Virginia. There are sandy shorelines to resemble a beach, there is paddle boating, and there are waterslides at this like. It was so much fun that we did this more than...

Changing US$100 notes in France

by mke1963

We experienced major problems changing US$100 notes in France this year.In principle, you cannot change US$100 notes at banks in France. Most banks will accept them if they are being paid into a French bank account at your home branch, but the money will not be credited until they have cleared a fraud check. However, we did manage to change them at the Bureau de Change at Bordeaux Airport, but they were a little reluctant even then. They said that they are also reluctant to accept the largest Euro notes as well for the same reason. If possible, avoid travelling with US$100 notes!

Opening hours in France

by mke1963

Throughout much of France, especially in rural areas and small towns it is best to treat Mondays like Sundays....banks, many shops and restaurants and offices are closed. The reason is that most places, including banks are open on Saturdays so remain firmly shuttered up on Monday.Arriving anywhere on Monday morning can create a suggestion that the place has been deserted. After lunch, many shops, cafes and restaurants do open but it is difficult to predict which ones.Generally the post office will be open and usually a few cafes and restaurants, but do take care; don't rely on specific businesses being ready to deal with you. Phone ahead first if you can to check their opening hours. One of the reasons there are so many guide books - in French - for each area of France is that these contain masses of details about opening hours, not just attractions but also all kinds of businesses. Even...

Pharmacies

by Arial_27

I went into several pharmacies and drugstores all over France and found them a lot different from what I'm used to in Canada. Where I live, the drugstores are huge and there are several aisles of anything you want to find. You choose the product you want, bring it to the counter and pay for itIn France however, the pharmacies are very small and there isn't a lot of stock available for you to just choose on your own. You have to go up the counter and tell the people what you're looking for. They have everything stocked behind the counter! So my suggestion: any embarassing hygenial products you may have - bring them with you in your cosmetic bag!
