French Online DICTIONARY

by Lady_Mystique

http://dictionary.com/You think my French is good??!! Ha! Think again. I can translate just about any text from English to French or French to English with the click of the mouse. Of course, the literal translations are rough around the edges, but with a sharp pencil, one might never know it wasn't the years at Berlitz that made a difference.

French YELLOW PAGES...and WHITE too !!!

by Lady_Mystique

http://www.pagesjaunes.fr/It's the French Yellow Pages, plus. Use it in English or French. Find any address, any phone number, any business, any anything in France. To find any person in France, switch over to the White Pages.

Visit the best France has to offer.

by kiwi

Often people will say, don't go here or don't go there, it's too touristy. But what they forget is that for the rest of us who don't live in France, we have known about and heard about it for many years. As outsiders we need to actually visit some of these places. After all they are not tourist attractions for nothing. And for some other countries we have very young histories compared to Europe, so it's mindblowing to see some of the old stuff.Paris itself has a lot to see, so get yourself a guidebook and spend some time visiting.

Take a Cruise on Lac Annecy

by Paul2001

One of the more interesting things that I did while in Annecy was take a cruise on this prestine lake. Lac Annecy is described as being the cleanest lake in Europe and from what I could see, I won't argue with them. The water is astonishing clear. The boat travels around the perimeter of the lake, taking in the numerous chateaux. One will be awed by the fact that these are all privately owned for this is the land of the filthy rich. The mountain backdrop against the lake and the chateaux, is also breathtaking.

French Hip Hop

by Maximilian21

I have really taken a liking to french Hip Hip it has a brutal honesty about it and sings about the experience of the marginalised in France. Most French hip hop artists come from poor suburbs of Paris, Strasbourg, Toulouse or Marseille. Hip hop first appeared in France in the early 1980s, just as the genre was achieving some success in the US. Paname City Rappin (1984, by Dee Nasty) was the first album released, and the first major star was MC Solaar with his first hit "Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo". If you have an opportunity listen to a group called IAM from Marseille www.iam-style.com . Massilia sound System are also pretty cool.

Politics

by Maximilian21

On the whole most French are fairly political and are brutally opinionated (much like myself). Unfortunetely in some political arguments they can make you feel preety small. Its incredible how the society can be polarised, alomst split down the middle between the right and the left (its even worse in Italy). See where your ploitcal perseuasion lies by taking the follwing test. http://www.politicalcompass.org/you will see if you come out Jean Marie Le Pen or Jose Bove (hopefully more the latter)

Speak/ Learn French

by Maximilian21

There is nothing stupider than to come to France and speak English or any other language for that matter. Make the effort and you will find that most French people are very accomodating and will help you. Imagine how you would feel if thousands of people come to your country each year and refused to speak there language. Besides there no harm in learning a little bit. I know im biased because it was my first language but lets face it, its the most beautiful language in the world. Even the swearing sounds amazing.

Further reading...

by allikat

If you're an armchair traveller, or looking for inspiration to visit France, can I recommend that you read Peter Mayles books, i.e. A Year In Provence, French Lessons, etc. An English writer with a love of Provence, its people and its food, Mayle and his wife moved to the Luberon region where he wrote about their experiences as they settled into their new life. The books are wonderfully descriptive and really give you an appetite!
