    Dieppe Port

    by sue_stone Updated Jul 6, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Dieppe has a pretty port area that is filled with boats and activity. In the 15th century it was the most important port in Normandy.

You can walk along the boardwalk and look at the boats. There is also an obligatory fountain at the corner of the port, and a small fish market.

There is also a gritty part of the port, but we didn't check it out, preferring the more attractive area in the centre of town.

    Eglise St-Jacques

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you are walking about the old-town area of Dieppe you will no doubt come across the impressive Eglise St-Jacques.

This is a Norman Gothic church which dominates Place St-Jacques. It has a serene and lofty interior, with some beautiful and colourful stained glass windows. Originally built in the early 13th century, it has been reconstructed a few times since.

Take a moment to pop your head in and enjoy the peaceful and cool interior. Admission is free.

    Chateau Musee - Medieval Castle

    by sue_stone Written Jul 4, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Sitting on a cliff above Dieppe is the Chateau Musee, a medieval castle. It is a very impressive site up on the cliff, best seen from the beach side of town.

The 15 century castle has been home to the governors of Dieppe, used as a prison and now it is a museum. The museum is home to the towns art and maritime history. The town was once home to numerous ivory carvers, and you can view some of their work here.

Unfortunately the castle was closed when we tried to visit it……please be warned that it is shut for lunch between 12-2pm each day! We had to go and have some lunch instead and unfortunately had to leave soon after so couldn't go back.

    Fun in the castle

    by amapola66 Updated May 26, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

One of the best days we had in Dieppe, was when we visited Dieppe castle.
    It does not dissappoint.

Whether you are into castles or not, there are still alot of things within the castle walls to keep you amused.

We climbed up some very spooky 'Scooby Doo like' stairways and strolled across the castle grounds which are still in very good condition.

The best part was the amazing views from the top. From here you can view the whole town and right along the coast and we had great fun taking silly photos in a giant empty picture frame perched there obscurly on top of the cliff.

The castle is also home to a decent art gallery where we saw a good Henry Moore exhibition, the usual sort of castle stuff, as in coats of arms, old ceramics and treasures etc the Small Person (9 at the time) - loved it.

It's a bit of a hard walk, if you are not a good walker, but I believe there is access by car from the top, so you can avoid the climb.

    Highly Recommended.

Dieppe is overlooked on its western side by a Chateau and some cliffs.
Best to visit in late afternoon or evening, when the sun is behind you (or early morning to see the sunrise).
