GROS HORLOGE, Rouen
Favorite thing: In an adjacent building to the Gros Horloge this shop is awaiting after you. What do you think that this shop sells ? Actually, this is a Real Estate Office ! If you want to buy one of those romantic old "colombage" houses, then, this is the place. Unless you want to buy the shop !
Favorite thing: Walking away from the main entrance in the Cathedral, you will find yourself in front of what the locals call "LE Gros Horloge" (male). Note that in French, that should be "LA Grosse Horloge" (female). But in Rouen, may be due to pollution by pesticides, the clock has been subjected to a change of gender !
Favorite thing: The Gros Horloge, here seen from the Place du Vieux Marché, bears, as its name says a huge clock. It was first set on the neighboring belfry. The citizens of Rouen felt it was not easy to read the time. Then, this arch was built in 1527, Renaissance style, especially to hold the clock;
Favorite thing: The underneath of the vault of the Gros Horloge is entirely carved. On one side, a large medallion shows a flock of sheep in a landscape with Mediterranean looking trees (Pinus maritima, Parasol pine). Animam suam povit pro ovibus suis.
Favorite thing: The underneath of the vault of the Gros Horloge is entirely carved. On the other side, a large medallion shows a herd of oxen in a landscape with Mediterranean looking trees (Pinus maritima, Parasol pine). The carving reads : Pastor bovis.
Favorite thing: Close to the Gros Horloge, this building offers a different style, no exposed beams, no "colombage" with small windows. It might have been built in the early 19th century and bears the influence of trading with the Nordic countries.
Favorite thing: The underneath of the vault of the Gros Horloge is entirely carved. On top, a large medallion shows the Good Shepherd and his sheep, which refers to the coat of arms of Rouen that bears Saint John the Baptist with its lamb.
Favorite thing: Close to the Gros Horloge, is a monumental fountain, built in the 18th century and which symbolizes the good relationships that prevailed between the governor of the city, the Duke on Montmorency, and the citizens.
The 'GROS HORLOGE' is the most famous monument in Rouen. You can't miss it.
