Garbage collecting at Saint Maclou Church

    In most towns, garbage collecting takes places in the early morning and as it is usually the time when I wander in town, I can get a shot on it. In Rouen, it takes place in the late afternoon, and... I was there ! When I will have enough stuff, I will make a tip on garbage collection in the world !

    some misc photos of Rouen, a wonderful city where history and traditon blends with modern and young population. a trou normand!!!

    1) over the bridge where the ashes of joanne d'arc were thrown and the Seine river
    2) tower church Saint Maclou, at rue martainville in old section, house of wood,great !!
    3) rue de gros horloge, with the big bell tower in the back, recently restored and can be visited!
    4) Interior gardens of the hearth of Saint Maclou ,behind the church of Saint Maclou, entered thru a very narrow doorway!

    St. Maclou's Aître - this square is hidden behind a dark passage, so despite being an important site, it is a little off track. But a very cool must-see, being an old 15th-Century cemetery for victims of the plague, with its walls carved with funny skulls and gravedigging tools.

    But even these fancy fences get dirty with dust, mud, etc.. Then, they need some grooming! Actually the grooming is done with a high-pressure jet of water and we were lucky to catch that unusual sight.

    I have got another one ! Garbage collecting with another church behind, isn't that great ! In Rouen there are so many churches, that garbage collecting occurs always in front of, by the side of or behind a church.

    In Place Charles de Gaulle, in front of the Hotel de Ville, you can see the equestrian monument to Napoleon I built in 1865.

    Saint Maclou church is still under repair. The fence that protects and isolates the working area from the passersby has a very nice look and represent a kind of shadow show of a city which helps to wait when they will be removed !

    • There is a lovely cathedral at Rouen, but don't just nod and snap a photo; try to attend a mass there, and (if Catholic) take communion. Very nice.

    • If you have time, don't miss this beautiful little side-street called 'Rue Eau de Robec.' A small stream runs through the street separated by paving stones and archways. The architecture is gorgeous and it's untouched by tourist traps.

    Flaubert called the street 'Little Venice.'

    There is also a lovely little café along this street - can't recall the name but you can't miss it - and many antique shops.

    It's in the Saint Maclou quartier - ask for directions or a map at the tourist office opposite the Cathedrale.

    Chateau de Vascoeil is just outside of Rouen. Its grounds are adorned with sculptures (mostly modern). This one is called 'La Grande Paternite'.
