Favorite thing: I may be wrong, because we didn’t tour the streets of Lagny extensively, but it reminded me a little of small towns in Surrey in England. Most houses seemed fairly substantial, with many dating from the 19th century or earlier (main photo). There also were some which I’d put in the category of mansions, such as the one in the second photo - though whether this is still a “one owner” residence or now converted to units could be another matter! Either way, living here with a view across the Marne would seem rather pleasant!

Favorite thing: Every town needs at least one main street – The “Rue du Chemin de Fer” is one of Lagny’s. Doesn’t it look intriguing? I rather would have liked to have the time to wander up this pedestrianised street and explore among the old buildings, but as we were running late (see the “transport” tips), that wasn’t an option. Maybe next time we’re there!

Favorite thing: Long, long ago in the dark ages, an Irish monk by the name of St Fursy began the old Abbey of Saint-Pierre in what became Lagny. It was destroyed by wandering Normans and rebuilt in the 9th Century. Not surprisingly, a fortified entry was added in the 13th Century. With the Revolution, most of the Abbey was dismantled. This is what remains of the Abbey’s old entry fortifications and you will find here an inscription dating from the Revolution. Some other buildings from the Abbey remain (built much later in the 18th century) and these now are occupied by the City Council.
You will find these fortification ruins near the city, at the start of Quai Ste-Père, not far from the Pont Maunoury.
