When I was small, I read “The Wind in the Willows” – maybe you did too. If you did, you’ll probably remember Ratty telling Mole about his love of boats: "There is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." I’m unsure quite how that translates into French, but there is another quote I’ve heard in Australia, describing a boat as a hole in the water for putting money in!
Either way, there are plenty of people at Lagny who seem to agree with Ratty that boats are great for "messing about in”. The main photo shows a barge, converted to a houseboat, passing by. The second photo shows people following Ratty’s advice and simply “messing about”. Come to a point, the Marne leads to the Seine and connects with the canals of France, so messing about in a boat here could indeed take you on some fabulous trips to exciting places.

After an enjoyable lunch “en famille” with our friends, a quiet stroll seemed an ideal way to pass the afternoon. Should you find yourselves in Lagny on a pleasant spring day, there can be fewer more relaxing ways to pass the time! Head upstream from the town along the Quai Saint-Père, which leads into (essentially a name change) the Quai de la Gourdine, for a pleasant leafy walk alongside the river’s bank. The sign in the main photo translates as “Town of Lagny-sur-Marne, Marne riverside walk, Priority to pedestrians.”
We found quite a few people out for a walk, the passers-by all very friendly and relaxed: and why wouldn’t they be, in such a pleasant setting (photos 2,3) . Occasionally a bicycle came past, once someone drove (very slowly) to their home.
