Remember the cliche : the frenchman with his beret, his bottle of wine and his BAGUETTE ?
While it is difficult to find berets (most are now imports - especially from ...USA) and while french people drink less wine than before, the baguette (and generally speaking the bread) is part of the daily life.
No meal, no snack is complete without it.
There may be less varieties of bread than of cheeses in France but still...
Yyou can always find a bread to your liking :
- White, dark, complete
- Round, Squarish, long (again : baguette) ...
- Crispy or soft
- Plain bread, including nuts, raisines, olives, cheese, lardons ...
It can even become an art form, you will often see bread sculptures (hmm! i prefer to look at them than to eat them : the odd shapes often make for unevenly baked and a bit dry bread)
When you are in Paris, try more than a type of bread (plus, it's a cheap component for a snack), for instance, go chez PAUL (a chain of traditional bakeries selling breads, pastries, viennoiseries, sandwiches and serving small meals, chose and enjoy !
