Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris
Pompidou Centre (or Beaubourg - "nice settlement" in english) is one of my favourite places in Paris. Even if there are so many people saying about its ugliness, the Centre has over 7 million visitors a year!
This building is like turned inside out: escalators, lifts, air and water ducts and even the massive steel struts that make up the building's skeleton have all been placed on the outside.
And inside there's a flexible space with National Modern Art Museum, exhibitions halls and libraries. Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism...Matisse, Picasso, Miro and Pollock...
Here is where you'll meet representatives from each of France's historical colonies and possessions. In my photo you can see the Vietnamese guy on the left and the Ivory Coast characters on the right. I don't know where that tall robot in the middle came from but it was in no mood to help me find any French Polynesian dancers in this cultural quiche that ended up being a quick lunch.
Fondest memory: I had never seen so many Africans in one place! (Still haven't been to Africa) Visiting the Pompidou Center somehow reminded me of riding the elevators of Hong Kong's Chungking Mansion. I felt cramped in a small space at the modern art gallery surrounded by these French speaking Africans, only they wore designer clothes instead of tribal robes. Once outside I slowly became acclimated to the African cultures until this giant robot came out of nowhere and scared the merde out of me. I tried to photograph this space invader but as you can see his hand was faster than my eye and so I clicked and ducked and got the cluck out of that cross cultural chicken coop faster than Lance Armstrong to finish my first and only Tour de France.
(2006 update: I returned to Paris this year for my second visit but stayed away from the Pompidou Center.)
The "Centre Georges Pompidou", formerly "Centre Beaubourg". Massive structural expressionist cast exoskeleton, "exterior" escalators enclosed in transparent tube.
It's located in the centre of historic Paris, within one kilometre of Notre Dame and the Louvre, and on the edge of the densely populated medieval quarter.
The Centre's activities:
- presentation of the permanent collections of the Musée national d’art moderne - Centre de création industrielle (Mnam-Cci),
- public reading space, provided by the Bibliothèque publique d’information (Bpi),
- performances (theater, dance, music),
- cinema, symposia and debates, and publications.
Fondest memory: On my last trip to Paris, we saw a great exhibition on Alfred Hitchcock at the Pompidou Centre. I'm not sure if this was a temporary or permanent exhibition, but if it's still there I'd advise you to go - it's a lot more fun than the Louvre.

Centre Georges Pompidou
Centre Georges Pompidou is one of the world's most extraordinary museums, which contains the largest collection of modern art in the world.
An X-ray-style extravaganza of steel and glass, striped by brightly coloured pipes and snake-like escalators, it looks as if someone has turned the whole building inside out.
A view of Le Centre Georges Pompidou. It is constructed in 1977 in Beaubourg quartier. Here, you can go to museum, they have a big collection of modern art, few paintings of Picasso,If you are interseted in modern art, i recommend on it.
Le Centre Georges Pompidou is only 5 minutes away from Chatelet metro station.
Fondest memory: DO YOU KNOW IT??
At Centre Georges Pompidou, each pipe has different functions.
Blue pipes are for air conditionning
Red pipes are for circulation
Green pipes are for liquids/ fluids
and the yellow ones are for electricity!!!
The Pompidou Center (Centre Pompidou in French) is one of the most spectacular buildings of Paris. It was designed by architects Renzo Piano (from Italy) and Richard Rodgers (from the UK) to bring art and culture to the man in the street.
Its 1977 factory style architecture violently contrasts with the surrounding houses of Paris' oldest district near the Hotel de Ville. You like the Pompidou Center or you don't, but you will not forget it with its glass facade, its external stairs (below on the picture) and the red, blue and green external pipes on the rear facade.
In fact, the Pompidou Center has been a great success with its easily accessible public library, its art exhibitions and the French National Museum of Modern Art.
The Museum has large collections of paintings spanning the 20th century and including works by the most famous artists (Picasso, Braque, Max Ernst, Magritte, Chagall, Matisse, Delaunay, Kandinsky, Klee and many others). You can see above a Kandinsky painting and below a Klee Painting from the Museum's collections.
You will enjoy a splendid modern art museum, a large public library and a splendid view on Paris from a very spectacular and central building.

The Pomidou Center is a must see. They have tons of modern art including a thrilling Warhol silkscreen of Liz Taylor. There's also a gargantuan orange plastic vaccuum bag thing that inflates and deflates - it must be twenty feet in ht. and god knows how big around. The escalator is on the outside of the building so you have a great view traveling to the exhibits on the top floor. It's like the Beverly center times 100. You can have a nice lunch nearby.
Fondest memory: The Luxembourg Gardens are great. You can sit or stroll around and watch those wonderful French school kids in their red sneakers and green jeans- they're really cute!
One of the fountains is murky and black so you get a pleasant sense of mystery in the middle of a soothing park. There's a nice internet cafe across the street - Cafe Orbital so you can email your friends at home.
