 | Paris Walking Around Reviews | Tips 31 - 40 of 167 | | You will have a fine time in Paris even if you never make it to the courtyards surrounding the PALAIS ROYAL near the Louvre, but if you do find yourself strolling across the gravel here, find these cool, silvery spheres which are actually a fountain of sorts. Take a picture of yourself, reflected in them, and think you are such an artist. Then you may leave. ;-))) Leave a Comment

Coming from the Pantheon and walking in the direction of the the Jardin du Luxembourg, you can see the Tour Eiffel, though it's far from this place. Most of the times I was in Paris I didn't visit the area around the Tour Eiffel. But it was almost impossible not to have at least a glimpse at this famous landmark of Paris from other parts of the city, when strolling around. Leave a Comment

There are several places within the city from which to view Paris from on high, but be warned. As with any other metropolis the city's pollution comes into play with any elevated perspective. The Tour Montparnasse, the galleries of Notre Dame, the viewing platforms at the Eiffel Tower and the funicular and hilltops of Montmartre give excellent vantages of Paris from "above." After several trips of avoiding the 5th arrondissement I gave in on the last two trips, first exploring the St. Michel/Cluny area, then the Pantheon/rue Descartes area. I was delighted by the history as well as the small nooks and crannies. . I will be somehow telling you about the walk I took [with Beatchick and Tsarina] along the path of the 1210 Phillipe-Auguste wall, but until then here are a few images from the latter part of the 5th. I enjoy stopping and reading the advertisements for apartments to rent or buy -- there is a whole different set of code words for the number of rooms and the apartment's characteristics. Most are outrageously expensive, but occasionally there is a charmer at a decent price. But if the ad begins "Dans un bel immeuble XVII ème, sur rue calme..." I know I'm in over my head ;) . The reason that you see so many of these real estate concerns is because, unlike the United States, properties are usually only listed with one agent.
Dreaming that one of those apartments could be mine ;) Leave a Comment

On my last trip I strolled along St Germain [north side] from the Arab Insitute in the 5th to the Odeon metro station in the 6th. Along the way I peeked into many windows of shops and restaurants. The pictures show some cool t-shirts and a lovely Moroccan restaurant.

Situated in the middle of a beautiful forest, Fontainebleau was a favourite hunting residence of the French kings from François 1er to Napoléon III. Since 1981 the Palace and Park of Fontainebleau is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage. Leave a Comment

Strolling around Paris at night with all the bridges and major monuments lit up makes you believe that Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I was out walking one night and came upon this scene along the Seine. A band had set up with mics, amps and speakers and was entertaining the gathered crowd with very good renditions of Hendrix tunes. Notre Dame was illuminated in the background, the moon was overhead. Look at the photo below. Paris is a BIG city. You probably aren't going to stay more than a few days, therefore, I suggest that you bite the bullet and use a taxi once in awhile to get you across town. This will save you some time, plus you will be able to see parts of Paris that you wouldn't see if you were traveling underground. We have used the metro, which is great, but once in awhile we wanted to get somewhere fast, so we took a taxi. Here are some tips: Always ask the driver for an approximation of the cost. Look to see whether his meter is covered and is starting with a low fee. Show the driver on your map where you want to go (we had a driver who purposely wandered and we learned this lesson!) If the driver goes the wrong way or wanders around too much driving up the price of your trip, ask him to stop and get another taxi. (this has only happened to us only once.) Make sure you are getting in an official taxi.
Get up high and enjoy the view. The food with live music. Walking....
