Only the history of the cabaret.
It exists since 1860. Its first name was the "Cabaret des Assassins" because of a painting showing a murder of a serial killer : Troppman.
In 1880, it was named "Le lapin Agile" (The Agile Rabbit) as a joke because the painter, Gill, made a picture on the wall with a rabbit leaping from a saucepan and it was said : it is "le lapin à Gill" (Gill's rabbit). A copy of the painting is still in exibit.
Roland Dorgeles and his friends set up here a huge trick.
They tied a brush to the tail of a donkey which realized some modern paintings (especially, A Sunset on the Adriatic) and they sold them as made by a new painter : BORONALI (the anagram of Aliboron, the name of the donkey).
The specialized critics found the work "very interesting".
Here, Picasso paid a lunch with the "Arlequin". You would pay less.

Montmartre & Pigalle: The steps under Sacre Coeur

The steps just under the Sacre Coeur are polulated by tourists suring the day...when the sun goes down, the place is taken over by the young locals who go there to drink, talk with friends, play music and sing.

Very authentic and relaxing "nightspot". The only warning: be very careful with the pickpockets! They tend to think that drunk tourists on the steps are easy targets...one of them just sat right beside me after talking to his mate...it was very strange...I just moved over and sure enough, he left as well very soon...

    Very casual

Moulin Rouge is probably the most famous cabaret in the world. It made Cancan big in 1961 and it's still a "hot spot" ever since!

The current show, called Féeire consist of 100 artists, 60 of them being the georgeous Doriss Girls from all around the world.

Shows are relatively expensive (87-97 EUR), if you also want to have dinner, the price goes up to 140-170 EUR.

You have to reserve your place in advance by phone or on the net.

As they posted it on the page: Formal attire. Jacket and tie will be appreciated. No shorts.

Moulin Rouge: Not A Must-See but Good

  • It was my aunt's idea to see the Moulin Rouge show; it was either that or dinner at Altitude 95. Since she likes cabarets then she figured this one would be great.

We booked the dinner/show package-the Toulouse Lautrec menu to be exact. And it's not cheap. It costs 150 euro/person.

We took a tour package that includes the transportation and pickup at our hotel. As you're dropped off on the sidewalk you'll notice what seems like hundreds of other tourists like yourself lined up to enter the theater on Blvd. de Clichy. And don't be surprised to see alot of sights while waiting :)
    This is Pigalle after all.

After you're let into the theater's foyer you will be demanded to take off your coat-yes, so that you can check it for a fee. They don't allow coats in the theater. Maybe it's a hazard if people trip on coats hanging from chairs?? Oh, by the way there's also a vendor selling the programmes for like 7 euro or so (can't really recall).

It's a huge theater with the dinner patrons sitting on the main floor and the drinks only patrons sitting far up. Dinner was not so great; it was a chicken dish that was a bit dry. Dessert was okay. On the whole, as others have noted, the food is not that great. But being a package it came with a 1/2 bottle of champagne per person. My aunt could not drink more than two glasses so I got the honors of drinking as much champagne in one sitting than I've ever done before.

The show itself is a variety show and unbelievably good. The performers are very talented, the dancers-both the women and men-are talented as well and, of course, in pretty good shape!

There is one act where a huge aquarium slides out from under the stage and a girl dives in and does her dance number-with a few albino snakes. Uh, I have a phobia of snakes so sitting upclose to the aquarium gave me the creeps.

One amusing thing: loved checking all the young & old guys with their eyes popping out when the girls were onstage!!

In summary, I recommend the show itself but not the dinner.

    Semi-formal to formal dress required

CHEZ MICHOU: Where the Girls....are BOYS
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Caberet where the girls are boys.

The club is named for the well known Parisian personality who will be on stage to entertain dressed in metallic blue, blue glasses and an immutable smile.

Visit the web page for more information about this very entertaining show!
(Only the French language part is operational...the English part is still being built, but...still gives a good idea of the place)

As you like...but CHIC...in either male or female attire.

Comedie Française: One of the Oldest ...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The theater troupe of the Comedie Française was founded in 1680 by Louis XVI.
This is one of the oldest running theater companies in the world.
It was moved to its present home base (the building adjoining the Palais Royal) soon after the end of the French Revolution.
This is the only national theater company to have its own permanent troupe of "house" performers. The repertoire that is presented spans the years from the traditional classic French theater of Moliere and Racine to the modern classics.

One of the pics included here shows the side box office window of the Comedie Française, in Salle Richelieu.
It is here that 95 seats are avalable with "visibilite riduite"-reduced visibility.
They can only be purchased one hour before curtain.
    Cost is only 4.50 Euros.
I'd venture to say this is a good deal ..... especially if you'd like the experience of Classic French theater, but don't know the language fluently or well enough (like myself!) to pay for a full price ticket.

    Box office hours: 11am-6pm daily.
Ticket cost range from around 5 euros to 30 euros.

    Seine: Dancing by the Seine
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the left bank of the Seine at Quai Saint-Bernard between the Sully and Austerlitz bridges there is a park named after the Corsican singer and movie star Tino Rossi (1907-1983). This park was created between 1975 and 1980 by the architect Daniel Badani. Unlike most Paris parks, which close at sunset, this one stays open all night and has developed into a tremendously popular venue for open-air dancing by the riverside.

It's all free and spontaneous. Somebody brings a CD-player for the music, and anyone is welcome to join in. There are usually two or three different kinds of dancing going on in different parts of the park, the most active being the tango group. They give tango lessons in the early evening, and then all dance until late into the night.

Second and third photos: Understandably, the best tango dancers tend to be older South American couples, but people of all ages and all nationalities come to dance here.

Fourth photo: In a different part of the park, near the Institute of the Arab World, there is an area where mainly young people come to dance. (Not the tango, in this case.)

Fifth photo: A bit further upstream there is a place where jugglers and other such performers congregate. My son borrowed some juggling clubs from someone, just to see if he could still do it -- and he still can! (He used to juggle in school, but hasn't done it since then.)

Makes this one of your stops on a night you want to be casual.

When you walk in the front door, the place appears to be very small....WRONG! Look up and you'll see a balcony with seating above. Look straight ahead and you'll see a stairway going down. Walk down the steps into another large area, complete with DJ and anoth full bar.

Not knowing what to expect, we made this one of our stops along with Cabaret and Hotel Costes. Lizard Lounge is definitely NOT like the two mentioned! Less trendy with a very mixed crowd, it's a great place to get a drink and chill out with your friends (or meet someone new, who knows?!).

Casual is fine. Jeans are OK for all.
