by Lady_Mystique Jazz has always had a large following, with good French groups and many foreign musicians living in France. After WW2, many African-American jazzmen settled in Paris : among them Sidney Bechet, Kenny Clarke,... Today, American musicians include Archie Shepp, Steve Potts, Nina Simone (who died recently, ...). The characteristic of French jazz is that it is open to other forms of music (electro, african, oriental) and very creative. A typical form of this creative influence on jazz is "gipsy-jazz" (jazz manouche), illustrated in the 1940s by Django Reinhardt (guitar) and Stéphane Grapelli (violin) with the Hot Club de France : a music that everybody knows in France, with a very specific flavour. Today, famous French jazzmen include Didier Lockwood (violin), Martial Solal (piano), Jean-Luc Ponty (violin), Michel Portal (clarinet), Claude Bolling (piano), Michel Edelin (flute), Dany Doriz (vibs), etc... NEW MORNING is the most reputed jazz-club in France!!! Every year it welcomes the big names in jazz. Accommodations for guests are about 200-300 in an authentic jazzy atmosphere. The music starts about 9-9:30 pm and continues to midnight. The admission is (was) about 100-150FF. It's best to get there about half an hour before the music starts. If you are in Paris and you like jazz, you must try to go to this club, or you'll regret it. Mais certainement!!

by davequ Whatever your age, taste, musical preference or background, (imho) a trip to Paris is not complete without a night of jazz. New Morning is one of the better jazz clubs in Paris. Has had all the greats from the past, and all the hot new acts. It's all about music (no food) and it even manages to close almost early enough to catch the late Metro back to the hotel. Really a good deal for the money (15-20 Euros/head + drinks). Be there by 8:00pm or reserve a ticket as it fills up quick if a "known" or popular act is playing.
All different kinds, almost anything works here. Says "no smoking" but there's lots of smoke. by Olgeorg So, you've made it this far and you're still wondering what this site is about. well, it's about paris stripped down to the butt-naked, bare essentials - just like the name suggests. but it's not about the paris you know. or at least you think you know. we want to point out that there's more to paris than the kind of tourism the city is renowned for. if you've been up the tower and got lost in the Louvre, fair enough, but why would you want to come back and do the same thing again? we want to tell you about the other stuff you can do like listen to music, go shopping, dance in clubs and drink in bars - culture made in paris, by paris, for paris. so this site is as much for the weekend vistor as for someone who lives here and knows the place inside out. we want to show the real side of the city, not the one in the tarted-up tour guides or the glossy fashion rags. but that doesn't mean it's rebellious, bolshie, defiant or alternative. that depends on your idea of what constitutes the norm. we think this is the norm, so sit back, relax, interact and get NAKED.
