Jardin d'Acclimatation, Paris
one of my original first parks visited in Paris and still a nostalgic favorite. The park is right around porte Maillot on metro line 1, and from there you take a petit train for the fun into the park. Love it.
The park is now managed by LVMH!
where my kids grew up in their life while in Paris , and keep coming back as grown ups.
And other more famous, as this garden park is 150 years old + It was October 6 1860 when emperor Napoléon III,with his wife the impératrice, Maria Eugenia open the Jardin Zoologique d’Acclimatation; what was a zoo. 1861 there is an aquarium; during the war of 1870 the gardens are devastered !!! with temperatures -12C and hunger in the city due to the war. The two elephants were sacrified for food during the war, and today only remaining wild animals there are two brown bears and some fallow deers as the lions were gone in 1954,and the monkeys in 1995. After this war the garden park is decline; in the 3rd Republic , the names come back to the park such as Ferry, Grevy, Gambetta, ,and Clemenceau,as a site of science and culture.
By 1876, after the invention of the little train by Decauville the Jardin d’Acclimatation takes possession of one, at the start the line starts from the Étoile and runs over the bois de Boulogne, after the route is change to starts from as now from the porte Maillot. One of the remnants of the war of 1870 is the pigeon tower, first was use to delivered messages and the tower still there with it's pigeons at a high of 25 meters.
The palace of winter or palais d'hiver, was done by a Miss Lefebvre in the then near village of Villiers and moved to the garden park, this foliage palace was 75 m long, 25 m wide, and 10 m high, and was open to the public in 1861. It eventually has an area of 8 000 m², with plants, flowers, a gallery , palmarium, conference rooms and for concerts and cages for birds. It is no longer in the park, as a memory a building was built in 1998 that carries the same name ; a painting of the original palace is shown in this bulding by the side of the pigeonnier or pigeon tower.
At the end of 1874 the park has 250 horses permanent, stables were built and the horses were use to battle in WWI. Today these stables have been restored with the most style of the second empire. It is sitting next to the grand birds cage or Grande Volière, the house of Eugénie or Maison Eugénie ,and the fallen deers in its rocks. Today it houses the equestrian club and the Guignol theater or Théâtre de Guignol, childrens animation.
Each year a country is invited to showcase its good and tradition in the park carrying a tradition that goes back to early 1990's to revindiquer that here many folks from far away lands were brought for hard labor in park, they have now 19 hectares or about 47 acres to show what they can do better.
The garden is the best since 1905 attracting people from all over and Parisiens to its greens. The Jardin d’Acclimatation is part with the Disneyland Paris ,and the Parc Astérix in the top 3 attraction parks in France. Difference from those two is that the jardin has public service mission.
Today the park is entirely for families, with a instruction pedagogical aspect, with learning petting zoo, amusement park, petit train, animation guignol shows, and shops to learn a variety of things during the day. The harvest of honey, and the beach in the garden are two other activities that are and make this park still today a must for any visiting family to Paris. Enjoy it as mine had.
If it wasn`t for the Vt members I would not have known this park,it was great fun for the kids with the many rides it offers and the small zoo it has(Lamas, ponies, pigs, and Goats).it also has a small Muesum.
