I used different credit cards during a trip to Paris in May and here is the scoop:
There are three types of credit cards:
1)signature (U.S.A. style without a chip)
2)chip and signature (e.g. issued by JP Morgan)
3)chip and pin (e.g. issued by Travelex at airports)
Signature cards are accepted at all restaurants, hotels, museums, etc. with a live cashier.
Chip and signature cards work at all places the signature card works AND at unattended kiosks (e.g. metro, velib). The machine skips the step of asking for a pin.
Chip and pin cards work EVERYWHERE and you must provide a 4 digit pin.
Hope this helps future travellers to France!
If you are going to Paris, take loads of money, the place is rip off city. I can't believe they charge more for local beer than the same (non local) beer in London!!! £3.50 a pint in happy hour is not good value at all.
Coffee for £3 - who are they kidding!!!
And we went in the expensive areas either!
