Fur Coats from Cafe des Phares

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Another thing i noticed, and it shouldn't be too surprising in such a fashion-conscious city as Paris, were all the fur coats (real & faux) I noticed this winter. Normally, I suppose you'd expect to see them in the ritzier parts of town such as the 16th, 7th or 8th arrondissements (particularly around and about the Champs Elysees) but these beauties were noted around the Place de la Bastille. Perhaps they were tourists, perhaps natives - who can tell?

Berets in Paris

Beret in Place de la Bastille

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Berets seem to have made a comeback this year in the City of Light. This year, as no other, I've noticed berets all over the place. This was one huge surprise as even on le Parisians one saw berets. Most beautiful was a stylish red one on a grandmotherly 80-ish woman on le Metro. I was glad to see that it had made its comeback since there were so few during my last visit in 2003.

Leather Boots of all Persuasions

Leather Boots

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Leather boots are a favorite of women during the winter months as they serve the dual function of keeping feet warm & dry while also looking fashionable. As stated before, this was in response to the age-old question of what they're wearing in Paris. THIS is what they're wearing in Paris. Basically, people seem to wear what they like, the things they feel best express themselves. Thankfully, fashion in Paris is not so rigid that there is a code of what one must wear in order to fit in. But the message stated here is do dress nicely and do dress what pleases you.

Here they're wearing lace-up boots, buckled boots, funky two-toned boots, boots with skirts, with pants, with capris, jeans tucked in, and even the fashionista pointy-toed ones like I saw on the young pretty Asian woman in the Metro.

Comfortable shoes and a jacket

Luggage and bags: Travel light for the rooms are small and the elevators are tinier.
Carry a small travel bag to carry around your cap, water and camera

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Walking shoes for sight seeing and 1 pair of formal shows for evening wear
Around August-September the weather is pleasant but windy. So definitely carry a jacket. Shorts and light cotton pants would be the best gear for this time of the year

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: There are lots of pharmacies around but you will not recognise any brands that you would typically see in the US. So bring along any medication for known travel related problems.

Photo Equipment: If you have a digital camera I recommend a tripod and either a BIG memory card or a laptop to store the photos in

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Hat

Adapters, cameras, clothes

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: In the winter - scarves are a must! If you don't want to appear like an obvious tourist, you would wear dark, solid colored clothing. Nice slacks - polyester blend or gabbardine. No tennis shoes or flip flops. Hard closed up shoes with a slight heel. I took a trench coat instead of a thick wool coat and that worked well for me.

Photo Equipment: Digital recorders/cameras are a must have! And, spend the money for the titanium batteries - they last. I was constantly reviewing my photos to make sure they were good and this process uses up the batteries quick.

Miscellaneous: Don't just bring one adapter and don't count on the people at Radio Shack to tell you this is all you need. If it wasn't for my friend, she brought several (a kit) and only a couple of them worked out for us. Also, your high watts dryers, straighteners or curling irons will blow out the electrical - you need to bring electronics with low watts. We had 4 curling irons and my $6 iron was the only one that worked.

Luggage and bags: A wise idea for anyone planning on doing any shopping is to bring two suitcases instead of trying to jam everything into one. Reason primarily is that if you luggage is over a certain weight limit (check with individual airlines - the weights were different in different countries) you will get charged a fee (i paid 30 USD once and then 30 EUR in Spain to France). You can check two bags at no additional cost so why not have the room purchases and save the cash.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: In winter, be sure to bring an umbrella and weather tolerant coat/ boots. Weather was rainy a good amount of the time we were there - rain, snow, rain again.

Be fashionable. I wouldn't wear old T-shirts or ratty jeans and sneakers unless you want to be imeedaitely spotted and labeled as an "American Tourist". If you still go with this outfit, see my tip under warnings and dangers for beggars - as you'll be a target.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Bring benedryl in case of any sort of allergic reaction. Who knows what the process is to get medications there for stuff we can readily get over the counter in the states.

Suggestions for a visit to Paris in January
Diana75 profile photo

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Compared to other places in Europe buried in snow in this period of the year, we've been lucky during our stay in Paris.

The weather was quite ok, the temperature was around 5-6 degrees above 0 and we had a light rain in two days, but nothing that could stopped us walking all day long.

As I said before, Paris is not a small town and for sure the pair of comfortable shoes was my best friend.
I haven't got a hat but when I climbed Tour Eiffel was windy and it would have been great having one.

For a perfect journey in Paris in this period of the year it's mandatory to have: a pair of comfortable shoes, hat, umbrella, warm clothes, a small bag (for not having problems with the pickpockets in the metro or in other crowdy places), but also an elegant outfit for a nice night out.

More Money!
ScubaBoy profile photo

Miscellaneous: If you are going to Paris, take loads of money, the place is rip off city. I can't believe they charge more for local beer than the same (non local) beer in London!!! £3.50 a pint in happy hour is not good value at all.

Coffee for £3 - who are they kidding!!!

And we went in the expensive areas either!

Luggage and bags: Less is better

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: I can't stress this enough - attractive COMFORTABLE shoes. My feet and knees ached the entire week and I am only 30! I had even bought cushy insoles for my leather boots. A warm coat, scarf and gloves.

We tried to dress as Parisians do - simple and classy.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: You can get whatever you need in Paris.
