La Mère Catherine: Tourists & History * 18e

A well located cafe/restaurant for watching the action on Place du Tertre -- that's the good news and the bad news. Overpriced and overrun -- but for a cup of coffee probably worth the tarriff for the atmosphere.
    .
It IS historic, founded in 1793 during the French revolution. Danton is supposed to have left a grafitti on the wall, loosely translated as "Drink and eat, for tomorrow we die."

Favorite Dish: Head for the chalkboard menu as that is seasonal and enjoy the good wine selection as you watch the world go by ...

Le Bruant: Cozy French cafe in Montmartre

A cozy restaurant tucked away in the hills of Montmartre just around the corner from Les Deux Moulins. We came here on La Grande Nuit and had their one of their menus that included a glass of champagne. The cuisine was traditional (and delicious), the service prompt and the server was a character. The prefect combo for a great evening in a French cafe. At one point, a guy came into the dining area trying to sell roses and was quickly ushered back outside by our server. When the guy said in French, "but the ladies need roses!" our server replied, "but we have roses in here and they're free!" and then he hands my wife a peach rose from out of their vase. It was funny, especially since, after he did that, he ended up having to give a rose to every girl in the dining area.

The diners themselves were a very diverse group, Germans and Italians as well as us Americans, and a few locals at the bar. Overall a very nice ambience though kind of a tight squeeze.

Favorite Dish: My wife and I had the Magret de Canard au poivre vert (duck breast with green peppercorns) my parents, the Coquilles-St. Jacques. To accompany the meal, a bottle of Sancerre wine. For an appetizer they had a very nice Feuillette de Chevre, but I indulged in their smoked salmon with toast. For desert I had some excellent sorbet. Several different flavors of sorbet with a rasberry coulis in the middle of the plate. mmmm....

A new restaurant-bar, installed in the "Denfert Rochereau" RER train station. The entrance is outside on the left.
The decoration of the restaurant is nice !!!
