Bistro Beaubourg: Eat for cheap in Paris: the return

    by Hamster_Huey Written Jul 16, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    outdoor tables in summer...

A very cheap restaurant serving Fench typical brasserie food:
steaks, steak tartare, andouillette, fish, etc..

Simple and hearty food, served with the ubiquitous French (or liberty) fries.

    No frills, simple and efficient.

Poor service though (even for French standard :-). Don't be affraid to ASK if you want something.

Favorite Dish: Great steak tartare (raw minced beef with spices).

    Bistrot Beaubourg: great!

This bistrot was right below our apartment, so I suppose we were always going to give it a go at some point. A cold, wet Sunday night was the perfect opportunity.

It fitted in with my introduction to D of the difference between a restaurant, a bistrot and a brasserie. Just such a typical bistrot.

A good menu, but bistrot food - big portions, but not fancy. For starter I had a plate of 5 "charcuterie" - pâté (2 kinds), Bayonne ham, dry salami & garlic sausage. It was enough for 2! D had an anchovy salad - also delicious, and much lighter.

Main course was andouillette with french fries. Good, but also a bit fatty. D had beef bourguignonne.

Dessert - home made crême caramel.

We washed it down with a bottle of St Emilion.

    €60 for 2.

When I got home I discovered it is recommended in my Paris guidebook!

Favorite Dish: It's just the epitome of a Paris bistrot.

I'd go for the crême caramel. Not the dainty wee round thing you'd get in a restaurant - two huge spoonfuls gouged out of the bowls in which it was made.
