Café de la Mairie

Visit Henry Miller's favorite Paris café, where he would sip his morning café and look at the "fat belfries" of St-Sulpice, as noted in his classic Tropic of Cancer.

Café de la Mairie is located on Place St-Sulpice facing the church. One morning I stopped by here to enjoy my walnut bread (procured from the famous boulangerie, Poilâne) along with their large, steaming grand café crème for le peitit dejeuner (otherwise known as breakfast). I'd eschew any pastries from this café and pick up something from one of the nearby wonderful patisseries/boulangeries, such as famous baker, Gérard Mulot, where you could get a lemon tart; located at 76 rue de Seine. It is said that sometimes Catherine Deneuve can be seen walking thru the place on a given morning.

The server is a little slow in getting to you but once he's taken your order he's very efficient.

Favorite Dish: The View! They can dish up the view to me ANYTIME! Well, et un grand café crème, s'il vous plait!

i was BEFORE my coffee, when taking this pic :)

as this café is just on the left side of St. Sulpice Church, i usually have my first coffee here with my friends, after school. it's a nice place, quite nice coffe, but the waiters don't speak english, so here's a little coffee dictionary (as we guessed):

café creme: it a long coffee with lots of warm milk
café olé: long coffee, with less milk
capuccino: double espresso (or a long) with milk steam on top

i always go with the café creme, it's a safe bet, all around town :)

Favorite Dish: café creme
