Les Racines: A Real Neighborhood Bistro

“The French approach to food is characteristic; they bring to their consideration of the table the same appreciation, respect, intelligence and lively interest that they have for the other arts, for painting, for literature, and for the theatre.”
    — Alice B. Toklas (1877-1967)

We chanced upon Les Racines, une petite bistro du coin, a budget bistro. This is a real bistro: checkered tablecloths and low prices. It is also a local, neighborhood bistro. Les Racines translates as the Roots; we were the only lunch-time dinners. It was wonderful, akin to private dining!

We had arrived in the late afternoon; so although the menu offered filet mignon, grilled steaks, as well as steak tartare, poulet roti à l’estragon, gratin de macaroni au jambon and a tarte au legumes, the kitchen was only serving cold dishes. I ordered a tomato/mozzarella salad and a lentil dish and a demi carafe of cotes du Rhone. It was so good.

There is a resident cat lazing about Les Racines. I love the French approach to animals in restaurants. Dogs are routinely allowed to dine with their owners, sometimes, if the dog is small enough, to sit on the owner’s lap during the meal. I hope that never changes. In America such human, and humane, touches would be wiped clean under the false guise of sanitary, health interests.
