Viaduc des Arts: Totally unlike any other place in Paris

    by Paris92 Written Apr 13, 2008 154 reviews

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

People are always trying to find someplace in Paris that hasn’t been taken over by tourists and the Viaduct des Arts is one of the few that might fit in that category. It’s a lot more well-known than it used to be, so see it before it becomes just another tourist trap. It’s essentially a long street of artists studios that range from needlework stores to all-natural crafts to porcelain painters housed in what used to be a train viaduct. Every now and then the studios will prohibit visitors from actually entering, but usually, even if they do, they figure out a way for you to at least see the process through windows. There’s a lot to see but it can be done in half a day—maybe even a little less. When you get out of the Metro, look around for signs pointing you to the viaduct—for some reason it can sometimes be hard to find.

Atelier N'O: Atelier N'O - Viaduc des arts

    Atelier N'O

This shop is dedicated to natural, recyclable and recycled objects. Since its creation 8 years ago, N'O has become a specialist in basic and minimalist objects. Raw material rules. Nature is the deciding factor. Cardboard, paper, plants and pebbles are transformed from something rough into something sophisticated. Cardboard becomes a beautiful travel diary, pebbles become candlesticks, plants become an aid to meditation.

What to buy: Sand from all over the world, rare shaped seeds and nuts, stones, weird bugs, dried plants, beautifull sketchbooks, oriental lamps, colorfull candels,....

Viaduc des Arts: Golden (and Silver, and Copper) Arches

    Arts and Crafts in Arches

Once a decaying train viaduct, the Viaduct des Arts was resurrected by the city of Paris, restored, and turned into a home for artisans. Under the arches of the viaduct, you will find 50 shops and galleries with artisans working in silver, leather, wood, glass, ceramic, etc. There are artists, cabinetmakers, sculptors, weavers, frame makers, coppersmiths, a flute maker, florist, blacksmith, hunting horn restorer, glassblower, jewelers… a remarkable fabric store, plus a nice café.

On the top of the viaduct a nice park and walkway has been created.

    Bus : line n°29
Métro : Bastille or Gare de Lyon
    RER : Gare de Lyon ( lines A and D )
