Panthéon: PANTH?ON.......
temple de la nation!

Centre des monuments nationeaux.

In the year 1791, the Revolution transformed the church designed by Soufflot at Louis XV's request and consecrated to Sainte Genevi?ve, and established the French PANTH?ON here.

It was used successively for religious and civil purposes until 1885, when the ashes of the writer / poet VICTOR HUGO were brought here, definitely dedicating it to the Republican creed.

Imagine: 77 great men lie buried here.

The PANTH?ON is a superb example of architecture built along classical lines and a real pleasure to visit.

Have a good look at the photograph and see that splendour!

OPEN: daily 10AM - 6PM

Closed: 1st Januari, 1st May, 11th November and 25th December.

If desired a guided tour is possible!

Montmartre / Sacré Coeur: Just visited Montmartre area this past weekend
the basilica was lovely inside - - very unique.

this part of Paris is filthy. We stood across the street from the Basilica to take photos of it, and the smell of urine everywhere was so bad. there was garbage in the gutters on all the little side streets - - squished plastic bottles, paper napkins, cigarette packages. I nearly took a photo because I was so amazed at the sheer volume of crap in the streets.

we wandered around for about an hour after the basilica, but realized it wasn't going to get any better, and hopped the metro the hell out of that part of Paris.

i really just want to put some pictures up
the eiffel tower is lovely and kind of one of those things you feel the need to see while in paris; however, just walking around paris is the neatest to me. there are a ton of artists setting up shop on the streets and kind of reminds me of new orleans in that way, but a lot nicer.

    hotel d'herouet
the hotel d'herouet built in 1584 is an excellent example of renaissance architecture in paris. it's distintive turret is of the late gothic style. the addition of turrets were expensive appendages that was popular with affuent parisians at the time. the hotel d'herouet is one of several fine examples of renaissance architecture in paris. some other notable examples are the hotel de sens, hotel de cluny, and the place de vosges. an excellent book on renaissance architecture in paris is "renaissance paris, architecture and growth 1475-1600" david thompson. pub: university of california press.

    Louvre: fantastic museum
the louvre was awesome! i went and loved all the artwork. we went right around 2:30 and there was virtually no line!! anyway, the artwork was amazing. the botticellis were gorgeous, as were the veronese, michallions, ingres, and all the artwork by david. da vinci had some beautiful pieces but i was very disappointed by the mona lisa. of course, i would reccomend going to see it, because you cant go to the louvre and not see the mona lisa! anyway, i did like the venus de milo, the medieval louvre exhibit, and the victory at sacramouth?? something like that. its a statue of a winged woman, minus the head, all by itself on the way to the venus de milo. definitely a must see. also, make sure you see the painting of napoleon's coronation by david (2 rooms past the mona lisa).
