We visited the future Musee des Transports managed by the RATP during the Journees du patrimoine 2004. It is currently located in a shed in the suburbs but will move in Paris when it will be ready. It presents all the range of buses since the ones of the 19e Century trailed by horses till the current buses. I was happy to travel in the same buse that transported me to the college when I was young. The museum showes also several old metro cars with wooden sits. I remember to have already seen the bus which is on the photo in 1971 when I visited with the Insurance School the training center of RATP. It was used to check the drivers. They had to watch a film on the screen in front of them and to drive. A car came suddently from the right or a pedestrian felt down, they must avoid the accident. I remember the film was shot from the top of the bus, so the feeling was rather to drive a plane flying at a low altitude. This kind of training was very futuristic in 1971 and the RATP drivers had only one accident (liable or not) each 2 years. Bravo. Wait the opening of the museum. It will be interesting. It is located in a former Carmelite Convent and shows ancient artifacts, paintings and objects owned by carmelites. It is also devoted to the Siege of Paris during the War with Prussia (1870-1871) and to the Commune, the Revolution which follewed the end the war (March 1871 - May 1871). It was the major interest of this museum for me. Unfortunately, they closed one room at the floor of this exibit. It is a pity because it the only museum focused on this part of French history and I can say the world history because the Commune has widely inspired Karl Marx who has had a huge impact on the 20e Century. Open 10AM - 5:30 PM every day except Tuesday (closed), Thurday (8PM), Saturday & Sunday (2PM - 6/30 PM) Ticket : 4 euros Leave a Comment Address: 22bis rue Gabriel Peri -93200 - St DenisPhone: 01.42.43.05.10Directions: RER line D1 Saint Denis. It is near the basilica and you can visit both in some hours.

Chatou from the Île des Impressionnistes by BeatChick I can't leave Chatou, because my painting is not finished yet. It would be nice of you to come down here and have lunch with me. You won't regret the trip, I assure you. There isn't a lovelier place in all Paris surroundings ~Pierre-Auguste Renoir~ We took the RER-A to Ile des Impressionnistes (island of Impressionists near Chatou, a suburb 15 mins W of Paris from Charles de Gaulle-Etoile station) to see a famous spot associated with the impressionists. La Maison Fournaise is where Renoir painted Luncheon of the Boating Party featured in Amélie. Monsieur Alphonse Fournaise, owner of the Maison, is seen in white t-shirt, hat & beard to the left while another Impressionist, Caillebotte, is shown in the lower right-hand corner in white t-shirt & boater. Arriving at the station RER Chatou-Croissy we meandered 20 mins to the resto carrying on our animated conversation. A better exit is the Rueil-Malmaison stop. It was a hot, crisp, clear day – perfect for our outing. On the terrasse overlooking the river, we lingered over seafood ravioli & lamb, rabbit terrine & roast pork, with a light, white Cheverny wine, 2001, from Les Borderies vineyard (21€), ending with un café. Neither of us drinks espresso in the US as it tastes bitter but the French create it hot & strong with no bitterness. It requires not too much sugar & no cream. Perfection. Average à la Carte (starter, main course, dessert): 39€ Set menu (2 starters, 2 main courses, 2 dessert): 24.25€ Attached is Le Musée Fournaise where you can buy postcards & whatnot of Renoir's famous painting. Louis XIV the Great by GUYON According to the the legend, the Paris bishop, Denis (3e Century) , was beheaded by the Romans but he picked up his head and put it in his arms and went away. But he stopped and felt at some kilometers from Paris, at St Denis. The basilica is the burial place for the French kings since the first dynasty (there were 3 dysnasties : Merovingian - relatives of Clovis, Carolingian - relatives of Charles Martel and Capetian - relatives of Hughes Capet). The first one to be burried there was Dagobert. He set up a basilica. And a large part of the kings (and their queens) who followed him had their vault there. During the Revolution, the people entered the basilica and the graves were desecrated. Louis XVIII made the basilica remodeled. You can reach the Basilica by RER (the surrounding area is not unsafe as some guides books tell that). Open from 9AM to 5:30 PM Close on Tuesday Guided visits in French and in English. Ticket : 6.10 euros Leave a Comment Address: 1 rue de la Legion d'Honneur - Saint DenisDirections: RER line D1 direction ORRY la VILLE - Station : Saint Denis

Gorgeous Giverny by TheWanderingCamel Lovers of that most French of art movements, Impressionism, really should try to make the trip out to Giverny - Claude Monet's lovely house and garden at Vernon, about 70km from Paris. It was his painting titled "Impressionism, Sunrise" that led to the name being given to the movement - derisively at first - by an art critic of the time. Little did he know how the name he mocked Monet wih would stick, and how universally loved the works of the artist would become. Monet and his family moved to Giverny in 1883 and he stayed there for the rest of his life. After years of neglect following his death, the house and gardens have been restored and have become one of France's major tourist destinations - deservedly so, the gardens are absolutely stunning and the house interior is charming. One aspect of visiting the house that catches many people unawares is the complete lack of Monet's own works hanging on the walls. Instead they closely covered -as they were in Monet's time - with hundreds of the Japanese woodblock prints that were such an influence on his work. Sheer weight of numbers can make a visit to Giverny feel like a bunfight but if you're lucky enough to strike a quiet ( well, relatively quiet) day or time, you will really appreciate the beauty of the place. There are any number of day tours to Giverny available but you may prefer to make your own way there via the train from Gare St Lazare to Vernon. It takes about 45 minutes IF you take a fast train - check the timetable carefully! Once you arrive at Vernon you have the option of taking a bus or a taxi the last 5km to the house. leyle Leave a Comment

This might be my most favorite place on the planet. Before coming here, I was never really a big lover of Monet, but now I’m a die-hard fan. He got it so right that you feel as if you are literally in a painting. It’s so much fun to peer over the shoulders of artists sketching and painting and outlining their versions of the place. For some reason, every time I’ve gone, there’s been some little group of school children on a class trip who are always dressed in little uniforms and holding hands. Unfortunately, every time I’ve gone, it’s also been blazing hot, which in the gardens isn’t that big a deal, but in his house, it can feel like a sauna.

Chateau de Vincennes tower and citadel by mrclay2000 Often called the "poor man's Versailles," the Chateau de Vincennes is the complete medieval city surrounded by its own moat in the southeastern quarter of Paris. Well outside the average tourist's compass and below even Pere la Chaise, these towers and walls have seen royal executions and births and a rich history for the better part of 600 years. One of the main buildings of Vaux le Vicomte by david010 While our stay at Paris we went on a trip to Vaux Le Vicomte. The chateau was used in filming for the film 'The Man in the Iron Mask' and was also the basis of the more famous Palace of Versailles. Louis XIV even had the creator and designer of Vaux Le Vicomte executed because he was jealous of the extragance and wealth it portrayed. It may not be as magnificant as Versailles but it's definatley worth a look. It has one of the earliest French gardens (which is very beautiful) and many exquisite rooms. It is only 55km from Paris and 30 mins by train. Leave a Comment

mattisons & friends by Mattison About an hour outside (to the west) of Paris in Monet's house in Giverny. The small house with a big yard is located in the center of this small French town. The yard is huge and very well landscaped. You can actually walk over the bridge that Monet painted many times and see his beautiful lilly pads. His large studio is now the gift shop. Leave a Comment
