The (rather horrible) statue of the Flame of Liberty in the Place d'Alma has become the place of pilgrimage for those who want to see where Princess Diana was killed. It was actually in the underpass that issues from just below the statue, you can see people leaning over it to see below.

Many of her admirers still leave flowers there, and there is a multitude of pathetic messages scrawled on the parapet.

La Flamme de la Liberte, a scale replica of the flame of the Statue of Liberty in New York (work by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi), is a symbol of the French-American friendship. After the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales (1997), it was transformed into an original memorial.

Due to the number of visitors to this spot in Paris, it could hardly be described as ' off the beaten path'.

That fateful evening when Diana, princess of Wales passed on is not marked by any official memorial or statue, but rather by the odd bunch of flowers left by visitors and graffitied messages left on the stonework standing over the underpass where her and Dodi met their ends.

The underpass, can be found at the Northern side of Place de L'alma. A traffic insection that can be found above the underpass, where a replica of the Statue of Liberty flame also stands. Many think this is a memorial to Diana. Appropriate it would be...but it predates her death, just.

The piece of graffiti in the picture reads :

Cold as idol, of a morning
warm as the June, of a night
a tiara of Roses, a spark, in the dark,
For a nation, like an angel of the North
Diana, Diana, half mystic, half dream,
No less, a Godess, for the millions aggrieved
Diana, Diana, half antic, half rhyme
That gazed on a planet, beneath a blue sky

    Jaques, Scunthorpe,England 12/9/05

Memorial to Princess Diana above the underpass in which she died.

Id first seen this a few years ago when Id rented a car and was heading out of town - unplanned this appeared so I sort of unexpectedly rather excitedly and hurriedly parked and taken some pics - that was pre digital days.

Here I was with this thing in view when I went heading for a good spot to watch the Bastille Day fireworks - so another unplanned visit - but rather moving. Its covered in graffiti - well love notes to Diana and to couples unrelated to the memorial by the look of it - but covered in writings.

We just happened to stumble upon this memorial monument. We were walking around looking for a cafe when we saw this memorial - with papers and flowers sort of littering around the base; as we looked closer, Princess Diana's pictures were on them. Then we saw the tunnel further down and realized that this was the so-called famous memorial.

Anyway, the memorial is a bronze metal-shaped flame with marble/granite base. The memorial doesn't really stand out, and if you're not really looking for it, you could easily miss it - especially in a big and busy city like Paris.

This flame was turned into sort of a memorial for the Princess....it contains photos of her and her children near the crashsite....actually this flame is right above the road where she perished that fateful night

After Princess Diana's fatal car crash, the tunnel has become quite a tourist attraction as well. Located next to the tunnel there happened to be a small monument of a torch (a replica of the Statue of Liberty's) and many visitors leave flowers, notes and pictures as a tribute for her there. The monument is at Pont De L'Alma along the Seine. You can take the metro to the stop of the same name.

I must admit this place really took my heart.
I passed from Pont de l'Alma just without knowing what i was about to see.

Well this is the place where actually Princess Diana died back in the years in a car accident.
Looking at the wall that surrounds Pont de l'Alma, you will read many phrases dedicated to her, and a big Liberty Flame, in full size, gold covered, replica of the one carried by the Statue of Liberty in NY City is there to remember her.

If there is a romantic female in your travelling party, you will have to visit this site on the banks of the Seine. Views down the intersecting streets, as with most of the thoroughfares in Paris, result in special sightings of other Paris landmarks.
