Not strictly Paris but very close. There are loads of company head quarters here and a big shopping centre. There is also the grand arche and an interesting art trail. Go to the tourist information centre near to the fountains and the Malongo coffee place for more info Leave a Comment Directions: Metro ligne 1 or RER A

The roof of La Grande Arche de la Défense offers impressive views (especially at night). In the distance is the Arc de Triomphe, and to the right, the omnipresent big metal tower. The top of la Grande Arche is usually not crowded at night, and is always breathtaking. Art exhibits of varying quality take place in an exposition hall at the top. Right now there are some very erotic nude photographs, some impressive black and white nude poster-size photos, and paintings I didn't like at all. The elevator ride to the top costs 7 € . The observation deck is open from 10h00 to 19h00 in the winter (last elevator ride up at 18h30), and from 10h00 to 20h00 in the summer. Leave a Comment Directions: In La Défense, the modern business area just outside Paris to the west. Métro Line 1: Grande Arche de la Défense (take Sortie [exit] E.Website: http://www.grandearche.com

This striking building has a rooftop observation deck. Elevators move through the tubes you see inside the arche. The area, La Défense, is primarily an office district, but there are hotels, a shopping mall, and restaurants for the tourists. Leave a Comment Directions: West of Paris-- take the line 1 Metro to La Défense

a few kilometers northwest from the Arch de Triumph on Avenue Des Champs Elysees. The La Defense complex of futuristic office buildings is the most ambitious town planning project ever taken in the Paris region. The project began around 1960, and now there are over 48 towers providing office space for over 900 companies. This was the second of my three favorite places in Paris. I felt a great sense of optimism for modern mankind expressed in the architecture of these shiny new buildings Leave a Comment

La defense is a suburb of Paris with a lot of nearly skyscraper buildings to live and work. They are already a monument of the city, although I don´t like them a lot. But they are an important part of Paris ans so far also a must see, I think. On my pages a lot of must see´s in Paris are not mentioned because ...I didn´t see them....or I´ll better say, I saw them, but didn´t catch enough information to write about them..as there are of course the Louvre, Notre Dame, Arch de triomphe, la place de la Concordia and surely a lot of more. This is of course the building you cannot miss in La Défense! Coming from the lower metro station you have it in Front of you, 500 m away, and you walk to it looking around at statues, buildings, perspectives, and slowly approach, approach and notice how it grows in the sky. This hollow cube has been designed by Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen and structural engineer Erik Reitzel, who won the tender emitted by French government, under President Mitterand; the purpose was to extend the “historical axis” of Paris, going on one straight line from Louvre Palace to the Concorde Obelisk, the Champs Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe, and now very far, the Head of Defense. The Grande Arche has been inaugurated in July 1989, bicentennial of the French Revolution. The website below gives lots of information (tabs are in French!) about the building, technical details, and more little stories, like the fact Notre Dame Cathedral could fit in the hollow of the cube. Nice is to make a visit on the roof from where you can have a great view over Paris and the western suburbs, using the fast panoramic lifts. There are three ways to get up, in fact: 1) pay the fare for the lift: 10 Euros, and you can go to the roof museum and go on the roof. 2) Make a reservation at the roof restaurant “ô 110”, and you can use the lift free. The menu of the restaurant looks good, but expensive. 3) Tell the lift attendant you made a reservation at the restaurant with a big smile. . . use the lift free, and don’t go to the restaurant. . . . . :) I had no problem last time (Sept 2008, bad weather day), with another VT-er, but there may be checks upstairs. . . . take risk. . . . . :))) I like this big cube with simple and perfect shapes, at day or night, from far or from close. . . . . This monument, hosting mainly government offices has character. During day time there are lots of ways to look at the Grande Arche, like for example from the Agam Fountain (picture 1), see it from under Calder’s Spider (picture 2), or in Spring with Cherry blossoms (picture 3). I love it a lot at night, lit by bright lights, and hidden behind the water plays of the Agam fountain, in rhythm with classical music (picture 4), or when it appears so brightly in the dark blue sky (picture 5), displaying a sort of a crystalline shape. . . . Directions: Metro: Line 1, go out at Esplanade de la Défense station RER: Ligne A, station La Défense; be aware that you are in 2nd zone for public transportation and the fare from Paris is higher than with the metro.Website: http://www.ladefense.fr/english_english.php Other Contact: http://www.grandearche.com/inter

A FASCINATING SECTION OF PARIS IS THE LA DEFENSE !!!!!!! AMAZING BUILDINGS AND ARCHITECT..WHO I BELIEVE WAS Johann Otto von Spreckelsen/?????? MY GREAT MEMORIES WERE THE THUMB AND THE COOL BIG SCREEN SHOWING MOVIES AND THE SPECTACULAR DESIGNS OF THE BUILDINGS. LOVED THAT CAROUSEL!!!!!! La Défense is named for the statue, La Défense de Paris, which was built in 1883 to commemorate the soldiers who had defended Paris during the Franco-Prussian War. The name of the area sometimes causes confusion with visitors, who occasionally assume it is some kind of military zone or establishment Leave a Comment Directions: The district is at the westernmost extremity of Paris' Historical Axis, which commences at the Louvre in the centre of Paris and crosses the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe.

This district presents main center of business in France, with headquarters of great french majorities concerns and main offices of foreign concerns in France. It is shopping except it also, exhibition, amusement and transport center. Several exclusive hotels are placed at its field too. Grande Arche is placed on western end of district on line as prolongation of “Paris historic pivot”, beginning from Louvre and finishing at Triumphal arch. This line presents pivot of district, it is pulled along la Esplanada Défense. Except offices, habitable buildings and amusement business center, important communication knot is placed in underground of western ends of districts, with final metro station number 1. Station RER, railroad station and bus. Field is excluded on surface of district from traffic.

(For more pictures, see my travelogue.) La Defense is basically the business district of Paris, although it is situated outside of Paris. It is the only place where you'll see a huge concentration of skycrapers and buildings that look quite futuristic compared to Paris' hausmanian-style districts. Leave a Comment Directions: Metro Line 1 : La Defense RER A : La Defense There are also several buses that go to la Defense
