This beautiful structure with its ornate facade was a masterpiece of 19th century. It was designed by Charles Garnier for Napoleon III and inaugurated in 1875. The interior of the opera boasts a "Grand Staircase" made of white marble with a balustrude of red and green marble and there is a five-tiered auditorium which is decorated in red velvet, gold leafing and cherubs. The ceiling was painted by Chagal and deserves special attention. Underneath the building is a small lake which inspired Paul Leroux's hiding place for "Phantom of the Opera". There are daily tours of the interior of the opera house. Leave a Comment Phone: 01 40 01 22 63Website: www.operadeparis.fr Other Contact: Open daily from 10:00 am - 4:30

by Aaron7 This is the famous Opera Garnier. This lavish theatre is home to the Phantom of Phantom of the Opera. Now few operas actually play here; it's mainly used for ballet. This should come as no suprise since many of Degas' famous ballet paintings were set here. There is also a museum here which runs through the Grand Foyer by the huge sets of stairs there. There's also a lavish auditorium similar to the display of Napolean III's apartments in the Louvre Leave a Comment Phone: 01-40-01-22-63Directions: Metro: OperaOther Contact: Hrs: 10am - 5pm

Ok, so the best view of Paris is from the top of the Eiffel Tower, we all know that. There are also the other popular spots to see the city from a high vantage point like the bell towers of Notre Dame, the area in front of the Sacre Coeur, the top of the Arc de Triomphe & the top of the Tour Montparnasse. Aside from the Sacre Coeur, all the places I ment'd will cost you a few euros. How about a great view of the city for FREE?? It's at the Galerie Lafayette (prob Paris' biggest dept store), not far from the Opera Garnier. Go into the Galerie & take the escalator all the way to the top, it's about 8 floors. Look for the signs guiding you to the "terace" & you'll come out on the roof of the Galerie. A must-see for photographers! You can get some great shots of the Tower, Sacre Coeur, & other places up there, plus it must be great for sunsets! Bring a telephoto lens! Leave a Comment Directions: Metro: Chausee d'Antin Lafayette or Opera. The Galerie Lafayette is behind the Opera at the Place Draghilev, corner of the Rue de Mogador & Blvd Haussmann. Very hard to miss.

by OrlandoBR The Opera, not a place that everybody remembers to visit in Paris. Few people go there, and it's such a wonder. Honestly, I believe it's the most beautiful building I have ever been in. Unlike the kitsch/colorful Château de Versailles, this is actually a highly good-taste architectural masterpiece. The building is from the late 19th century, the so-called "Belle Époque", and I'd say it's art-nouveau's greatest achievement. On the ceiling, there's a beautiful painting by Marc Chagall. The visit costs 6 EURO. Leave a Comment

by cpiers47 Like so many other tourists, we've only driven by and viewed the famous opera through the windows of our tour bus. But, of course you can still see a show here. It's on my huge list of things to do when I return to the city. Leave a Comment

The grand stairway of the Opera Garnier is constructed of onyx and marble, surrounded by Venetian frescoes and statuary. The opulent Performance Hall is decorated in gold and red with multicolored marble friezes, columns, and innumerable statues. Stunning - the only word. Pictured are the staircase and (limited) images of the main performance hall. Leave a Comment Directions: Metro: Opéra

Palais Garnier (designed by the famous Charles Garnier and build between 1862 and 1875) is the largest theatre for lyric opera in the world (it can accomodate more than 2000 people and 450 performers). Unique qualities : highly decorated facade, large arches, robust pillars, a monumental stairway enriched by marbles, vault decorated with paintings by Isidore Pils, a flattened cupola. The palace of Garnier, is the 13th theater to house the Paris Opera since it was founded by Louis XIV in 1669. It was built on the orders of Napoleon III as part of the great Parisian reconstruction project carried out by Baron Haussmann. The project for an opera house was put out to competition and was won by Charles Garnier, an unknown 35-year-old architect. Building work, which lasted fifteen years, from 1860 to 1875, was interrupted by numerous incidents, including the 1870 war, the fall of the Empire and the Commune. The Palais Garnier was inaugurated on 15 January 1875. Cant describe it anymore a must see in Paris and also for opera runs. Leave a Comment
