This is a remarkable museum among the best maritime museums in the world. The display has been improved in the last years, by emphasizing the main objects. The museum organizies specific exhibitions and each week conferences on naval archaeology.

The visit begins with large halls where are exposed models of vessels of the wooden navy of the 17th and 18th centuries. There are absolutely remarkable models because they are of the time and built in the arsenals. Extraordinary is the model of a vessel of line with 110 guns built in 1720 to teach to future King Louis XV the technique of navigation (photo 1).
It is during the reign of Louis XV that the first engineering school of navy builders was set up in France. The maritime arts are also present by the sculptures of stern and bow and by the famous collection of paintings on the harbours of France painted by Joseph Vernet.
Very interesting are the rooms dedicated to the evolution of the navy in the 19th century with the passage of wood to iron and sail to steam.

    ====================

We are now at the top, and in the middle of the Place des Droits de l’homme (Human Rights Square), a square that is alive and here is where the real fun starts. The views from here over the Eiffel Tower are fantastic, and the photo opportunities are endless. The Palais the Chaillot embraces the square with its two wings on either side, leaving one side open, creating the wonderful views from this high platform, on the Trocadero fountain below, towards the Eiffeltower and even further away the Champ des Mars.

The square is crowded with people, and that attracts of course your obvious annoying street sellers, trying to sell you the most crazy kitsch pieces of souvenirs. The crazy souvenirs brought a smile to my face, but my eyes were quickly distracted by these bronze statues that align the square on either side. Around 8 or 10 of them in total if I am correct, and all slightly different, created by different artists. They make the perfect foreground and contrast when trying to capture a photo of the Eiffel Tower.

For any amateur of maritime history a visit to the Trocadero marine museum is a must because this museum shows the transition in the 18th century from the marine carpenter to the naval engineer-builder i.e. the industrialization of the military shipbuilding. The arsenals were in that time the main industry of France.
This technological advance was made in France under the reign of Louis XVI with the adoption of standard plans for the vessels of which the most known are the ones of the engineer-builder Jacques-Noël Sané (1740 - 1831).
This engineer conceived a remarkable vessel with 3 decks and 118 guns. Sixteen were build of which the best known was the "Océan".
Sané developed also a standard plan for line vessel with two decks and 74 guns of which 93 exemplars were build so that this 74 gun vessel became the most important of the French navy. Such a vessel had a crew of 700 men.
A model shows the "L'Achille" who exploded at the battle of Trafalgar killing 500 of its crew.

  • Tip Rating:
  • King Louis XV was interested in marine matters. He studied sciences, geography and cartography and was also interested in the things of the sea related to art.
It is him who, in 1753, asked the painter Joseph Vernet (1714 - 1789) to realize the series of 15 paintings of the harbours of France. A whole room is dedicated to 13 paintings which form an exceptional collection as well by their historic importance as their artistic qualities. (Two other views of French harbours are at Le Louvre). These paintings of Vernet had a lot of success and many engravings were made.

Famous is also Louis Philippe Crépin's painting illustrating the boarding in 1798 of the English frigate "Ambuscade", armed with 42 guns, by the French corvette " Bayonnaise ", armed with 20 guns.

Cette série des ports de France a connu un grand succès et de nombreuses gravures en furent tirées.

The Musée de la Marine shows some stern decorations conserved from warships (photo 1). These were decorated with imposing figurative sculptures on their rear façade. The ships disappeared but some stern decorations have been preserved in museums.
This ostentatious and heavy decoration was a characteristic of warships from the 17th c. but was so expensive and furthermore harmful to the nautical performances that they gradually disappeared over the 18th and 19th c.
A large number of figureheads, perched upon the bow, have been preserved. Some are real works of art (photo 2).
Remarkable in this museum is the imperial barge of Napoleon I constructed in 1810 for the visit of the Emperor of the arsenal of Antwerp. The rowing boat is 19 m long and has a much decorated roof. This "Canot Imperial" (photo 3) was also used by Napoleon III and stored in Brest where it was forgotten over the years. It is the only boat in France of this type preserved in its integrity.
The Imperial barge was moved to the Palais de Chaillot in 1943 by the German occupants but was too wide to enter the museum. It is only in 1945 that a wall was demolished to bring the "Canot Impérial" inside the Musée de la Marine.

    frigate "La Gloire"

This museum is a must for anybody who feels some interest for maritime history. I have been here five times and would say it is the best maritime museum in the UE.
Very interesting are the rooms showing the evolution from sail to steam power and from wood to metal.
The museum has the original model (1859) at scale 1/33 of the first armoured battleship called "La Gloire" (photo 1). The project of this world first armoured frigate was made by naval engineer Dupuy de Lôme. The nautical and military qualities of this armoured frigate (powered by sails and steam) launched in 1860 were so good that 10 frigates like this one were build and gave a significant maritime advantage to France.
The frigate "La Gloire" had a length of 78 m (the model is 271 cm long), the armour was 12 cm thick, there were 34 guns.
The life on board of the 570 men was very difficult. To avoid boring the armour, side openings were banished. The crew thus lived permanently with the gleam of the oil lamps and no ventilation.
Some years later (1868) the same engineer Dupuy de Lomé had a more powerful battleship launched called "L'Océan" (photo 2) with 4 turrets for heavy guns prefiguring the 20th c. battleships. Strange is the big ram at the bow; here we are back to the "rostrum" ram of the ancient Greek galleys.

Palais de Chaillot and Trocadero fountains: Palais de Chaliot
  • Tip Rating:
  • This place is probably overshadowed by the towering Eiffel just a stone throw away from it ...but just like life itself ...if you cant fight it then ...might as well join it ! Thus, I guess the Palais de Chailot and Trocadero fountains have been living side by side with the majestic tower, complementing it with her own history and provide one of the most stunning platform to view the Lady of Paris ....Built by architects Carlu, Boileau and Azema in 1937 at a time when the French colonial empire was only second to the British, it is only natural that a Navy Museum which showcase the grandeur and supremacy of the French Navy over 3 centuries is conceived here in the Palais. ( Visit pass to this museum is part of the Musee and Monument pass ).

Unfortunately the Mankind Museum which shares the same residence here is somewhat not as famous as the Navy Museum. If the Navy Museum displays the grandeur of the French Navy this Mankind Museum which was formerly know as Museum of Ethnography gives you a glimpse into what the French Explorers find during their voyages to the New World ( could have been a cool museum for the locals to have a glimpse of the new land found by their explorer but now perhaps its hey day is slowly passing.

    Trocadero fountains

This place is also named the Trocadero as a remembrance of the French victory in Spain in 1823. At that time, the French king intervened there to help restore the Spanish absolute monarchy.

Palais de Chaillot and Trocadero fountains: Musee de l'Homme and Musee de la Marine
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the Palais de Chaillot, there are several museums and especially :

    - Musee de l'Homme : it is closed because it was becomen completly unattractive and must be merged with the Museum of Natural History. But it is still used for temporary exibits, like this one devoted to Black and Mortimer the caracters created by Edgar Jacobs the famous Belgian cartoonist (until April 2004)

    - Musee de la Marine : dedicated to the history of the Navy. There is bust of John Paul Jones (see my Annapolis page to understand why I am focused on the creator the US Navy).

Yes I have all the books of Black & Mortimer.

The Palais de Chaillot is a good place to sit and watch the world go by. There tend to be skateboarders and skaters, and hawkers selling their wares. The reason everyone congregates here is not so much the fountains here, not the Palais itself, but the fact that the Palais de Chaillot is just across the River Seine from the Eiffel Tower, and gives excellent views. Ironically, the best views of the Palais are from up the Eiffel Tower.

The Palais was built in 1937 for the Paris exhibition in that year. Along its walls are some very pretty bronze statues that make an interesting foreground to the Eiffel Tower if you can be bothered to climb up to them.

The Batobus will drop you off at the base of the Eiffel Tower, but instead of running directly towards this famous monument, I opted to cross the bridge over the River Seine first to visit the Palais de Chaillot and its Trocadéro Fountains.

The photo was taken from the top level at the Palais de Chaillot, which will give you a good overview over the Trocadero Fountain. The fountain can be quite spectacular when it is working (especially at night when it is lit up), but on this hot late summer day, the fountains were quiet, making it a bit boring. But there are some benches on either side of the fountain, some of them perfectly situated on a shady spot under the trees. A perfect place to take a little rest and absorb in all the views before moving up the stairs of the Palais de Chaillot.
