Place de la Madeleine and surroundings are well known in Paris for their luxury food and wine shops. The best and internationally recognized food shops are Fauchon and Hediard specifically described here in the "shopping" category. There are more: On the upper scale as what concern prices you have caviar shops. Prices range between 2000 € for the French farmed types and 8000 € for the best wild quality. In the medium range foie gras and on the lower side mustard from the house Maille. Now Maille mustards and vinegars are sold in most supermarkets and groceries in France and other countries, but the shop in front of the Madeleine church is a "vitrine" window to show the products to tourists coming for Fauchon (or the Madeleine church). So if you came from overseas to buy French mustard no need to spend you money at Fauchon as long as you are interested by the product and not by the name. There is also the wine shop Nicolas, again the "vitrine" for this group, but at the Boulevard de la Madeleine n° 3 you will find another specialist in wines "Lavinia" with a wide range of wines, champagnes, spirits and liquors at reasonable prices like their competitor "Nicolas". Southwards of la Madeleine towards Place de la Concorde you have the rue Royale, to the north there is the rue Tronchet leading to the Boulevard Haussmann. Eastwards is the boulevard des Capucines. The area is full of luxe boutiques mainly for ladies although men are not forgotten. Address: Place de la Madeleine.

A fruit & vegetable stand on Rue Cler by Erin74 Rue Cler is a market street located not far from Ecole Militaire, Invalides and the Eiffel Tower, on Paris' Left Bank. Rue Cler is a largely traffic-free pedestran area filled with colorful fruit and vegetable stands and flower shops. The stores spill out into the street and you'll see lots of cafes along this two block stretch. The street is lined with wonderful shops-- wine, cheese, chocolate, bread-- as well as a bank and a post office. You'll see Parisians shopping for their daily produce and tourists admiring the scenery. Cafe Roussillon is located on Rue Cler. This busy cafe is very popular in the neighborhood. The bar area is very active here and a great place to grab a drink before or after dinner. Check out the Fromagerie (cheese store) that has been brought out onto a cart on the street. The long, narrow, canopied cheese table displays wedges, cylinders and balls of the most wonderful cheese. There is always a crowd around this area. La Maison du Jambon is an excellent deli that sells food to go. You'll order, take your ticket to the cashier to pay, and return with the receipt to pick up your food. This place is also very popular and a great place to pick up a baguette at lunchtime. More great stores on the Rue Cler: Lenotre- Deluxe gifts, chocolates and wine. Olivers & Co Olive Oils- Sells olive oils and goods from the South of France. Le Lutin Gourmand Chocolats Confiseries- An AMAZING chocolate shop with gorgeous creations inside. Be sure to take some time to wander through this delightful area and enjoy it. Leave a Comment Address: Between Ave de la Motte Picquet & Rue GrenelleDirections: Take the metro to Ecole Militaire and walk up Ave. de la Motte Picquet. Rue Cler is on the left.

Atrium and dome, Galeries Lafayette (pic expands) by tiabunna Slowly but surely, my work for this VT page (oh the sacrifices, would I ever admit I was enjoying myself?) meant that I filled my collection of camera cards and the time came to buy another. I headed for the nearest large store, the Galeries Lafayette, and the price I paid seemed very reasonable compared to prices at home. Finding the photographic department took some effort (from memory on the 7th floor) and I had to ask directions from several helpful staff members. What impressed me most, however, was the building. I have since read that it is heritage listed, but the large atrium through the centre of it, surmounted by a glass and steel dome, is quite stunning. That’s it in the photo. It apparently dates from 1912, as does an Art Nouveau staircase. Address: 40 Bvde Haussmann, 9th Arr.Phone: 01 45 96 69 63Directions: Just behind the Opéra Garnier. Métro Havre-Caumartin or Métro Opéra

Every Tuesday, Printemps has a free fashion show at 10:00am on the 7th floor of Printemps de la Mode. No registration needed. Obviously not as chic or cool as attending a REAL fashion show, but a neat way to pretend that you are at least for an hour! Photographs, with flash are allowed. I confess I had a little trouble finding the show, I did ask and I was given directions, but sometimes my translating skills are poor. Also when exiting the show room after... taking the stairs will give you a look at the store's famous stained glass window un close and from the inside. Leave a Comment Address: 64 bd. HaussmannPhone: 01 42 82 50 00Directions: In the 9th, close to Opera Garnier.Website: http://www.printemps.com/

Bouquinistes along Quai de Montebello by BeatChick Bouquinistes stalls along the quai The bouquinistes in Paris is where to find a bargain on posters, post cards, old advertisements, rare books, old magazines ~ a veritable treasure trove. It was at the bouquinistes along the Quai de la Mégisserie (Right Bank) that I found a cool 1920s-era yellow Josephine-Baker-in-her-banana-outfit poster for a friend. I was thrilled! And my friend loves the poster. Photo: March 2001 Leave a Comment Address: Quai de la Mégisserie or Quai de MontebelloDirections: Along the Seine on the Right or Left Bank. Right Bank stalls may be reached via the Châtelet or Pont Neuf Métro stops. The Left Bank may be reached by RER St-Michel-Notre-Dame.Website: http://www.frommers.com/destinations/paris/0062021124.html

View from the top by rexvaughan The following tip is still accurate but the store is closed for renovation work and may not reopen for a couple of years. 15 July 2008. The top of the Samaritaine department store offers great views in every direction. There are even plaques indicating what buildings, etc. you are seeing. When we went there was a small fee of 1 or 2 euro. There is also a restaurant on the rooftop terrace so you can enjoy a meal, a snack or a drink while overlooking Paris. The advantage to this bird's eye view is that it is 360 degrees and is right in the middle of the city. Click the photo for a wider panoramic view. Leave a Comment Address: 19 rue de la MonnaiePhone: 01 40 41 20 20Directions: Across Pont Neuf from Ile de la Cite. Metro: Pont Neuf.

Having found myself in the upper levels of Galeries Lafayette, I decided to have lunch in their cafeteria. Unfortunately I took no photos, because I was just too busy trying to work out the system. At least it was satisfying, but this is not a restaurant tip. After leaving the cafeteria, which is near the top of the building, I noticed that it was possible to go to the roof. I was glad I did, because it is another of those pleasant little surprises that add so much interest to trips. On the western side of the roof, I found a small monument (main photo) to the unlikely achievement of an early aviator called Jules Vedrines who, having survived WWI, took his life in his hands and in January 1919 became the first person to land his aeroplane on the roof of a building in a major city: somewhat easier now with helicopters! Either way, this is where he landed. While you’re here, you also will be able to enjoy the excellent view of the Opéra Garnier (photo 2) and of Montmartre (photo 3). All in all, I considered my visit to the Galeries Lafayette to be very satisfying, even if before I left I’d made a goodly start on filling the camera card which I went there to purchase! I know that probably the right place of Lafayette would be under the "shopping" section, but this is not exclusively a place for shopping. Many persons come here also just for visiting one of the main attractions of Paris. Housed by a wonderful domed building with balustrades, here you can find the most important brands in the world. Address: 64 boulevard Haussmann

Dome of galleries Lafyette by sourbugger Galleries Lafayette on Boulevard Hausseman is the most well known, and probably largest, department store in France. It is probably comparable to Selfidges in London rather than Harrods. It spralls over three or four buildings which are either connected to each other or adjacent. If you are not in Paris for the shopping, then this place is worth a visit for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the main store has a central domed area that is simply stunning - a symphony of glass and iron, unbelieveably over the top. Art Nouveau rocks ! especially the staircase built in 1912 by the architect Cahnautin. The store is now classified as an historic monument. Only the French could design a building like this : one intended for the mundane purpose of shifting 'stuff'. Secondly, the outside terrace on the top floor (the eighth i think) affords some great views out over Paris, with all the main tourist sites in view...and it's FREE. Leave a Comment

Samarataine by Dabs 1/29/06 update: read in the paper that La Samaritaine is closed due to safety violations and that Paris' best department store view is now from the rooftop cafe at Galeries Lafayette, near the old Opera If you are near the Louvre, take a short diversion and head to the top of the Samarataine for a beautiful view of Paris! This is one of my favorite Paris tips as it is free and involves a beautiful view of Paris. Take the elevators up to the 9th floor and walk up the stairs to the 19th floor terrace for one of the best views of Paris. Leave a Comment Address: 19 rue de la MonnaieDirections: Just to the east of the Louvre, on the same side of the river metro: Louvre-Rivoli
