I was told that this is where i should start my tour of Paris. From the tower we could see all of Paris even the Eiffel Tower. From here you can orient yourself to where you are at and where you are going. From here you can see some spectacular views.
You take the elevator up ashigh as it will go then take the stairs about two flights.
Top of the Tower.
The Montparnasse tower is 59 floors and 210 metres high. A fast lift takes you up 56 floors ( 30 seconds ) there is a cafe at 56 floor which is enclosed. The last 3 floors use the stairs to the open air roof. Admission is around 10 euros.
Open Air Terrace
It stands about 210m high with an open air terrace on its 59th storey. You can tour round its exhibition centre and observatory on the 56th storey while enjoying your tea in one of the cafes there. The wait is shorter than Eiffel tower and you can still enjoy the view. Adult entrance is 8euros.
The Tour Montparnasse
The Tour Montparnasse is a typical example of 20th century architecture. The tower was designed by the architects Beaudoin, Cassin, De Marien and Saubot in 1973. In total it is 209 meters high.
The 56th and 59th floor are open for tourists. From here you have a very good view over the city. It is the highest point of Paris, even higher then the Eiffel Tower.
In the top there is a restaurant and a exhibition about the construction of the tower with documentation and pictures. When needed there are multiligual guides available to show you around.
At the roof you have a stunning view of Paris, even better then when you are on top of the Eiffeltower, because from here you can see the Eiffeltower as well :) There are signs to point you at all the monuments you can see from here, so you don´t have to be an expert to recognise things.
The Tour Montparnasse stands in the south of the south of the city, next to the train station...so if you are taking the metro take the metro to Montparnasse Bienvenue and when you leave the station the tower will be right in front of you.
The tower stands at 200 metres tall, it costs 8euro to go to the top on the 59th floor, there is a gallery on the 56th floor and this costs less 7euro per person.
The views from here are spectacular...you can see the Eiffel Tower and its relativley quick to go up - there are nowhere near the queues that you would experience at the Eiffel Tower....cheaper too for superb views!
The Observation Deck
The best views of the city of Paris are from the 56th floor and observation deck of the Tour Montparnesse. This is the only place in Paris where you can view every major landmark in Paris from above. Its what makes this building the perfect place to see Paris, while the Eiffel Tower offers great views, the only problem is that you can't view the Eiffel Tower! Thus the need for a building like Tour Montparnesse that gives you views of everything in Paris. The cost to ride the swift elevator to the observation deck is 11 euro, there is also a cafe at the top. It is worth the cost for the unbelievable views of Paris!
The Montparnasse Tower is about 200 m high and gives you a fantastic view over the city! That is the good part - the bad part is that admission is 7.50 €, which I find quite expensive! And that is the reason why we decided to enjoy the opposite view: we looked up to the tower and then visited the nearby market and cemetary instead!
Like soaring prices you go up......with an extra fast elevator.....till the very top....
The view over Paris is wonderful........
Off season it is not too crowded but as you can see in the photo the wind is almost blowing me off the top ....
Inside there was hot tea and hot chocolate and wonderful French pastry......but all the time I could feel the high building move and shiver in the wind......I know that it is necessary but I don't like that: I prefer climbing high mountains instead....
Why go up the Eiffel Tower to see a bird's eye view of Paris? Why not go up to the 56th floor of the Montparnasse Tower and then you can have the Eiffel tower in your photos! Even better, see the city lit up at your feet at night! Elevator to the top floor arrives in less than a minute.
Adult price, 9,50 euros.
XIVth - La Tour Montparnasse Infernale
... I've never been there, and don't expect me to go, until they put all the Amiante they've used inside off the building !!! Anyway, some feminine statues do hesitate between the unreachable tower and a steady policeman...

At 210 m (689 ft) tall, the Tour Montparnasse (Montparnasse Tower ) is France's tallest skyscraper. It is an office building located above the Paris Metro station Montparnasse-Bienvenüe. Europe's fastest elevator takes visitors to the 56th floor, a height of 643 ft/196 m, in just 38 seconds, where there is a breathtaking 360° view of the city and beyond. A restaurant is located on the 56th floor, as well.
I love to see the view of paris from here at night, the view of Eiffel Tower really spectacular with the light
Tour Montparnasse 56 is open every day of the year from 09:30 am to 22:30 (10:30 pm)(till 23:30/11:30 pm in summer), but latest entry is 30 minutes before closing.
Admission costs 13.00 € for adults.
The best view of Paris
At 689 feet it is the tallest building in the city (as of 2007); and it is also criticized as being out-of-place.
It offers the best view of the city - sometimes jokingly stated it's partly because it's the only place where you can't see the darn building itself :)
The observation deck is open daily from 9.30am to 11.30pm in the summer and to 10.30 in other seasons.
Admission costs Euro 9.5 for adults.
If you want to go to the roof please be prepared for the very strong winds ... make sure you're not wearing a hat as it will get blown away :)
Views over Paris
Montparnasse Tower is a great alternative to the Eiffel Tower for a view over Paris. It is easy to get to, not far from the Metro.
We visited Montparnasse Tower in the morning. The one advantage to visiting this Tower over the Eiffel Tower was that there was not a queue. We bought our tickets (slightly cheaper than the Eiffel) and made out way to the top in lift. There are 2 viewing areas, for those who are not keen on heights, there is viewing area inside the building, looking out through the windows. However, if you are like me, you prefer to be outside where there are no reflections to interrupt your view or photos. The second viewing area is up some stairs to the roof.
The views were fabulous, with one particular view you cannot see from the Eiffel Tower, it is of course a view of the Eiffel Tower.
The morning we went up Montparnasse Tower was slightly hazy although from street level this was not obvious. The same day we went up the Eiffel Tower but in the late afternoon/evening and we had perfect views with not a bit of haze in sight. Perhaps a trip to the top is best done later in the day.
Unless you want to say you have been to the top of the Eiffel Tower, Montparnasse is a great alternative.
Better view than the Eiffel Tower!!
Towering above Paris some distance to the south of the city centre is the modern Tour Montparnasse. Well it is modern in comparison with the Tour Eiffel, having been built in 1973.
At 209m it is far shorter than the Eiffel Tower but, to me, the Eiffel Tower looked tiny from the top of Montparnasse!!
Well, the beauty of Tour Montparnasse is that you can go up to the 59th floor viewing area. This happens using one of the fastest lifts around, where your stomach reaches the top approximately 30 seconds after the rest of your body ;-)
The views are stunning from the top. The advantage isyou can take a photo of Paris with the Eiffel Tower in the shot. Apparently you are able to see for 40km, though whenever I visit Paris it is a bit mauvais :-(
The Tower has incredibly long opening hours, open each day till at least 11pm!
Current prices are 8.50 € for adults, check the website for their complex pricing scales.
