Centre Pompidou, Paris
Maybe it is unfair to call this a tourist trap, but the day we visited we found very little appealing about the center. Granted, we did not visit the National Museum of Modern Art which I understand is a collection of great 20th Century art, but the center itself is purported to be a great gathering place. Maybe we hit at a bad time but there were few people about, the plaza was just a huge concrete area and the building itself seemed a bit dingy. As a matter of taset, I do not find the building attractive or appealing at all. Of greatest interest were the statues by Nikki de St. Phalle in the pool, especially when viewed with the old church in the background contrasting the old with the new.
Unique Suggestions: Go inside to see the museum. I am sure it would be worth the time.
When we got to Paris we only had a few days to look around, it was an arts trip with university, for our first free day we intended to look around some art galleries but didn't know that most of them are closed on a Tuesday, guess which day we had free to look round galleries?? The Musee d'Orsay is shut on a Monday, and the Louvre is also closed on one of these days.
Well they were in 2000, could have changed by now....
So it's well worth checking this out in advance if you're only there for a short period.
Fun Alternatives: We went to Notra Dame instead, that was open and walked around that area.
