Trains: SNCF, TGV, etc.: Thalys and reservations
The Thalys trains are a great connection for a day trip to Brussels, or a longer journey to Germany/Luxembourg. One tip: RESERVE! The earlier you reserve, the better your chances to get a seat...and a cheaper one at that.

The Thalys is not a cheap way to get from point A to point B, but it's fast. Unless you have a million bags, second class is fine enough. (No different than Amtrak.)

If you can reserve way in advance, get the Smilys or Mezzo Plus rates. A regular, last minute second-class (comfort) rate for a round-trip Paris-Brussels could reach 130 Euros apiece. For a day trip, it can be steep.

The train. We took the train...
The train. We took the train both times, once during the day from Amsterdam, the other a night train from Heidelberg Germany. The first time we taxied from the train station into town not knowing how good the Metro is. After the night train, we transferred to the metro then RER into St. Michel and were two blocks from the hotel for 10 francs each.
You absolutely CANNOT beat the Metro & RER trains. They stop most everywhere you want to go.

    To get from the airport...
To get from the airport (charles De Gaulle) you can ride the metro into the city centre for 7.20 euros. Cheapest way to go especially if travelling alone.
If you intend to use the metro quite a bit the best way to use it is with a day pass. It is called Mobilis and is valid for zone 1-2 (which is all you need for the major attractions). The pass is valid for busses too. The cost is 5 euros. Avoid the Visite Paris pass--it is a tourist trap.

Trains: SNCF, TGV, etc.: We ended up on the train ride...
We ended up on the train ride from He**! We were coming from Milan (Italy does not exactly have the best trains in the world). It was an 11 hour ride, stuck in an overcrowded train, where we ended up standing or half sitting in the hallway for 9 hours of the trip.
The Metro is the best! Very easy, no problems!

We travelled to Paris by Eurostar, a nice and relaxing way to travel.
Whilst there we used the metro and the RER.
For the metro and RER we bought a pack of ten tickets called a carnet. which cost 10 euros.
The trip to Versailles cost around 2.5euros each way.

We went by road, on a coach...
We went by road, on a coach trip - which is excellent value, however it isn't really long enough as most of the trips are only four days and 1.5 of them is travelling.

Flying is cheap from the UK and London to Paris is about 45 minutes by air.
    Walk, or use the metro.
french drivers are maniacs, I'm sure they have to take a test to demonstrate they cannot drive!

Walking is good because you can take everything in and take your time.

The metro is fun, cheap and very efficient!

You could land in Paris by Air...
You could land in Paris by Air or by Rail or even by taking the sae route to Calais and from there by bus/train/car.
Getting around Paris is most convenient as there are trains, metros, buses, trams. I found the metros very convenient.
