  • We bought the Paris Visite immediately from the trainstation and this covered our trip to and from Charles DeGaulle airport and throughout the rest of the metro. It was easy to use the transport systems, even with some from of luggage in tow.

It took about 45 minutes from the airport to arrive at Gare du Nord. We used the RER train.

From the Airports to Paris: From the airport CDG to the city
  • Tip Rating:
  • An easy way to save taxi money is to take the Roissybus from the city to the airport. They leave every 15 minutes from the Opéra to the airport Charles de Gaulle and vice-versa. The stop is right in front of the American Express office by the opera house (just don't let those diagonal streets fool you, they easily will). The ride may take too long: 1:30h (which in my case worked out fine, since I got too late at the airport and they let me skip the long lines in order to not miss the flight).

€ 6,00, you can pay inside the bus or buy it from a machine.

Another option are the Air-France buses, which cost a couple €`s more.

From the Airports to Paris: Les Cars Air France
  • Tip Rating:
  • We bought a round-trip ticket with Les Cars Air France to get from Charles de Gaulle airport to our hotel located near the Montparnasse train station because we didn't feel like lugging our suitcases around in crowded metro wagons. Line 4 goes directly to the Montparnasse train station, tickets cost 22 Euros round-trip (valid for one year), and the buses run from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. We bought our ticket at Terminal 2F.

It was a comfortable and carefree ride, but if I were to do it again I'd travel by RER and metro. It's cheaper, faster (especially if you're traveling during rush hour), and people really don't seem to mind your big suitcase after all!

From the Airports to Paris: Only one train from CDG to Ile-de-France (Paris)
  • Tip Rating:
  • RER B is the only train that goes from Charles de Gaulle to Ile-de-France (Central Paris). Once you get through Passport control, you're now in France and have to get to Paris somehow. You get the RER from the Gare (train station) located somewhat far from the terminals. There are free shuttle buses you can take to get to the Gare. Look for the train symbols near an exit or on the directory boards to find a pick-up point. Or, you can walk all the way to the Gare from inside the terminals, but it can be quite a haul.

Once you find the Gare (located under a hotel, Sheraton I think), you'll have to get a ticket. There are many automatic machines in the terminal, but they only take coins or credit cards and no one's credit cards were working. Worse, there are no change machines anywhere. Thus, you'll have to stand in the long line to purchase the ticket (8,50 Euro). Note there is a section to purchase tickets for "Grandes Lignes" which is for grand lines travelling much farther. You don't need to stand in that long line. Find the local tix section (Ile-de-France is a good indicator) and stand in that long, yet a bit shorter, line.

  • Most of flight for international and domestic flight at Aérogare 2. Following the sign to reach metro station. You should go out and take a free shuttle bus which links all of the terminals with the train station. (CDG1 and CDG2).
Here you have to buy train ticket CDG-Paris. It costs €7.80 and choose RER B. It tooks 40 mins to reach central of Paris.

If you choose taxi it costs around €35, depending on the traffic

Taxis are expensive, so take the Shuttle Bus to be found outside the airport. Bus stops show a number and for the Meridien we had to take a number 2.
When a bus pulls up, aqsk the man who unloads and loads the luggage and he will direct you to the correct stop. Buses come every 15 minutes. We used to both from and to the airport, even early in the morning.
    Price 13 euro per person

From the Airports to Paris: Getting to Paris
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can get to Paris either by plane or by train, and both methods are just fine. Paris has 2 main airports (Charles de Gaulle -CDG-, where I always arrive and is located to the north east of Paris, and Orly, located in the south) and many train stations, such as Gare de Lyon (shown on the picture). All of the airports and train stations are connected to the Metro and/or RER (regional train) network, so you don't have to spend a fortune in a taxi to get to downtown Paris as it was the case many years ago.

In my personal case, I took the RER + metro from CDG airport (I've flown from Mex City to Paris directly with Air France and via London with British Airways) all the way to Gare de Lyon train station, which was only 2 blocks away from the hotel I was staying at. You can do the same if you arrive at any other of the train stations located in Paris - it's easy to move from one place to the other using the extensive metro/RER network.

If you arrive by plane, there are also buses (such as the so called Roissy-Bus) which will take you from the CDG airport to the Opera Garnier, and Air France cars that will take you from either of the 2 airports to different spots in Paris for a fee of around 9-15 EUR (per person) depending on where you're going (for more info on the latter check website provided).

If arriving to Orly, they also have 2-3 different options to go to Paris, besides the AF Cars: you can take buses to nearby RER stations or a fast train called ORLYVAL which takes you to the Antony RER station; then you can go anywhere you want within the metro network.

There are also different options to transfer between these 2 airports, with Orlyval, Orlybus and AF cars.

From the Airports to Paris: Charles de Gaulle Needs an Overhaul!
  • Tip Rating:
  • OK. Charles de Gaulle Airport needs work. I have traveled quite a bit and I must say that this was the most poorly kept airport (excluding the airport in Havana, Cuba) that I have ever had the displeasure of landing in. It was just plain dirty and inefficient. I know that you should just accept things when you travel, and I was OK with it, but I am noting, for the record, that this was a nasty airport. The walls are covered in these octagonal mosaic tiles that used to be white but are now chipped and dirty. The ceiling looks like it's pure asbestos and the seats that were once bright orange were black with stains. We were waiting at the baggage carousel for an hour before we saw any suitcases. It was hot and there were no designated smoking sections so the air was stuffy. There is no convenient way to file into the elevators to exit the facility without having to bully your way in. We were wholeheartedly glad to be out of there.

I think had we taken a taxi at this point we would have been happier but we decided to take the RER train into Paris instead. We were just tired after not having slept for nearly 24 hours. We bought a Paris Visit pass good for 5 days for unlimited train travel and boarded the train towards Les Halles. I think we were shocked to see all the graffiti and the poor state of the suburbs on the way to Paris. Much of the scenery consisted of trash, barbed wire, and run-down buildings that looked like projects. Paris, like any major city, is very expensive and most people that work there have to commute. Kind of like New York. On the train two accordion players broke the ice and we finally felt like we were really in France and not on the Path headed to Newark.

From the Airports to Paris: Beauvais - Ryanair
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ryanair fly to Beauvais from Ireland, England, Scotland, Spain, Italy and Sweden. Beauvais is around 1hr15 North of Paris.

Ryanair usually have great offers on flights. I have flown to Beauvais from Shannon (Ireland) return for as little as 23 Euros.

When you arrive at Beauvais airport, Ryanair provide a shuttle service to Porte Maillot in Paris for 10 Euros.
