RER (Regional Trains): Going outside of paris?
If you plan to take the RER or metro to a station outside of zone one which is central paris, make sure that you ask at the ticket counter for a ticket for multiple zones. Depending on how far out of paris you are going you might need to pay more.

RER (Regional Trains): I'm stuck on the subway
Be VERY careful with the subways. If you travel outside the region you've been ticketed for, you'll have to get back on the subway to go back to the region. Sometimes you have to have a separate ticket to get off the subway and there won't be a place to buy that ticket either. The subways also aren't well defined. There are no colors to indicate which line you're on or where the train is going. I had a subway map and it was absolutely useless. We ended up using taxis instead. It was much easier and not as expensive. (35Euro from Arc de Trompeii to Charles de Gaulle)

RER (Regional Trains): Gare du Nord to Cour St Emilion
Ditto as above. a paris metro ticket will take you there.
gare du nord, you come off the train and can go to the RER not metro M station and there take the RER to Chatelet which is just one station.
At Chatelet it is a confusing station but well posted, dont throw away your ticket when you get on RER as you need it to get out and also to get into Metro. no 14 M and Cout St Emilion is two station from the terminus of the M 14.
Paris train stations and M stations are not luggage friendly, so if you have lots of luggage more than one pull on luggage, it might be a good idea to take a taxi, which would cost you in the environs of E20, and the taxi stand is just outside as you come out of Euro Star. The journey on RER and M is quick enough..

RER (Regional Trains): Route Finder in Paris - www.ratp.info
If you are looking for a door to door itinerary guide in France then using the RATP website is the solution!

I found this extremely useful, it tells you not only about the line changes but also the distances and times it takes.

RER (Regional Trains): The ONLY way to get around
Paris has an absolutely fantastic Metro and bus service. Forget renting a car. Don't even bother with a taxi. I would recommend to carry a good metro map (in color) plus a good general map with you. We didn't have a metro map but we did use the map from Frommers as our general map.
