There are many ways to get to Paris, but the one we took from Belgium was by the fast train, Thalys. The Thalys leaves Brussels every half hour and takes about 1 hour 25 min. There are also trains leaving from Antwerp, Liege, Namur and Ostend. Check the website.
It's a comfortable way to travel and the earlier you make reservations, the cheaper the tickets are. The end station in Paris is Gare du Nord.
From Belgium the easiest and fastest way to get to Paris is by Thalys train.
From Brussels Midi station to Paris Gare du Nord it takes about 1 hr 15 min. From Antwerp-Berchem it takes a little over 2 hrs.
If you book well in advance you may be lucky enough to get some really cheaps tickets, the so-called Smilys tickets. From Antwerp-Berchem the return fare is only 56 euro! (March 2004).
Most of the times I visited Paris, I came by train from the Netherlands. Since 1996 by Thalys, an international high speed service between Amsterdam and Paris, serving also Schiphol Airport, The Hague, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Brussels. For schedules and fares, have a look at the website fo Thalys.
In Paris the trains from the Netherlands and Belgium, including the Thalys, arrive in Gare du Nord. For travelling to other parts of France you have not only to change trains, but also stations in Paris. For the Thalys you need a special ticket and reservations.
From Brussels to Paris, an ideal way of transport, relativaly cheap and fast - it will take about 90 minutes to reach the city of lights
Negative : the welcoming "BF" bar at wagon 4 is unprofessional organised, problems to get a free space, making a long queu, the tenders have no money change or even the official menu list is limited. Better take yr own food on board - the trip is short
Thalys from Amsterdam to Paris Gare du Nord
I took this train roundtrip from Amsterdam Centraal Station to Paris Gare du Nord. The trip takes about 4 hours and makes stops Schipol, The Hague, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Brussels and on to Paris.
Through most of the Low Countries it travels at the same speed as any of the regoinal trains. But once you cross the French boarder and reaches the specially built and maintained high speed tracks, the train hits high speeds. It is distinguishable by it's red color.
The Thalys serves from Paris to the Low Countries and to Cologne, Germany. The trains were comfortable and very modern.
The Thalys train offers promotions from 25 EUR each way from Cologneif you book a couple of weeks ahead. Normal prices are 90 EUR each way. Duration is 3h45Min - arrival straight at Gare Du Nord from where you have a convenient Metro connection to everywhere in Paris.
2nd class TGV
I think the 2nd class on the Thalys is really a bummer. Far to few shortage of leg space, really! I think you pay enough so why not a 20 cm more to be able to sit comfortable?
I was not satisfied.
Besides the seats were all worn out, I had to guess what colour they were originaly.

Train between Paris and Brussels
My husband and i travelled from Brussels to Paris just last month by the thalys....it hardly takes an hour and a half.I think its the best n fastest way to travel between these cities. If flying is your other option, the time you take to check in and check out will leave you with little or no advantage over the train!but you have to reserve the tickets in advance.you even get a meal if you are travelling first class:)
An easy way to travel in central Europ is to travel by train. Especially now with the highspeed trains. It's cheaper then by airplane. We took a regullar train from my hometown Hasselt to Brussels. Then took the Thalys to Paris. The hole trip lasted 3 hours and costed us 26 euro. In Brussels there is a good connection to other trains like the eurostar which goes to Londen, or other highspeed trains. You can check the website for more information on timetables and rates. Here you can also buy tickets.
TGV (Thalys from Holland)
It is great traveling from Holland to Paris by train (Thalys). Remember one thing, your tickets are reserved for a specific train. We took one train earlier without knowing this, so half way we were check and apperently we were in the wrong train. "Mais je ne sais pas, hein?"
Thalys and reservations
The Thalys trains are a great connection for a day trip to Brussels, or a longer journey to Germany/Luxembourg. One tip: RESERVE! The earlier you reserve, the better your chances to get a seat...and a cheaper one at that.
The Thalys is not a cheap way to get from point A to point B, but it's fast. Unless you have a million bags, second class is fine enough. (No different than Amtrak.)
If you can reserve way in advance, get the Smilys or Mezzo Plus rates. A regular, last minute second-class (comfort) rate for a round-trip Paris-Brussels could reach 130 Euros apiece. For a day trip, it can be steep.

I took the Thalys train from...
I took the Thalys train from Antwerp, Belgium. The trip took about 3 1/2 hours. I can't remember the cost now, but I will check =).
The metro system is fantastic. Just make sure to ask for a system map at the main train station when you arrive. Or, just be a tourist and ask alot of questions like I did, and they will eventually say 'Would you like a map??' =). Here is a picture of the inside of Gare du Nord (all the people dressed in red, blue and white are France fans heading to a Euro 2000 game!)
