 | Paris Walking Around Reviews | Tips 11 - 20 of 38 | | Paris is a very walkable city if you keep in mind how big the city is! Don't plan to walk between the Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, and l'Arc de Triomphe... no matter how close they appear on the map, the total trip one-way would be about 7 kilometers. Use public transportation for the longer journeys, but walking is a must. Within the different neighborhoods, you need to walk to really get a feel for the city. A stroll down the Champs Elysees is a great experience. The area around the Eiffel Tower has several cafes and good photo opportunities of the tower. Walking along the Seine is another experience that can be savored... Leave a Comment Theme: Other

The first time in Paris, in 1983, I remember that I was amazed at the amount of walking one does. I had it again when I took a friend of mine to Paris, who had not been there before, and she had the same feeling. After two days she stopped talking to me, hahaha! But I was prepared of course, and didn't mind the walking. You see the most, after all. Taking the metro often also means a lot of walking. Because when you enter the metro, you may need to walk quite a bit underground to the right track. So in general, put on some good walking shoes and take the metro to your furthest point and walk back as much as you can. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Walking the best form of transportation in Paris. You definitely see a lot more and taking your time to enjoy the scenery. I definitely recommend walking, just get good walking shoes (Please NO running shoes 'sneakers'.) Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Paris is a very walkable city - quite a few sights can be combined and enjoyed by exploring them by foot! By the end of the day you are exhausted, but it is well worthwhile! Plus: you can always find a café to sit down for a café au lait and to rest your feet for awhile! There are some fabulous descriptions of walks that I found on another board called Travelers to Go - so do have a look: L'Arc de Triomphe - Tour Eiffel - Invalides Le Marais Quartier Latin St. Germain et Invalides Le Rive Droit Les Passages Notre Dame et Ile St.-Louis Latin Quarter Or go to this website for some other suggested walks! By foot. Paris is a 'walking' city. Get close to where you want by metro, then w-a-l-k. Look around you, observe the bustle, the sights, sounds (and yes, the smells) of Paris. There is nothing like the smell of freshly-baked 'croissants au beurre' emanating from a shop on a cold frosty morning, on your way to work. Theme: Other

Getting around Paris isnt brain surgery, but can be confusing, I think the most un-confusing way of travel is just by walking or cycling if its avalible to you. Streets are narrow and filled with crazy drivers, you would be better off not driving yourself. Leave a Comment Theme: Bicycle

A great thing to do in Paris when on a budget is walk instead of taking the Metro. Although the Metro is fairly inexpensive...you will find amazing things while talking a walk through the city. Walking is great for those on a budget because you can spend an entire day spending no money seeing the beauty of the city. On my first day in Paris I walked from the Le Marais area to Notre Dame to the Louvre to the Eiffel Tower. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

I think one of the best one on-line interactive maps available is the Paris Yellow Pages website, Les Pages Jaunes: http://www.pagesjaunes.fr Plug in the address you want to go to, click "itineraire", plug in the address (or metro or train station) you're walking from, click the radio button "piéton" and it'll provide you with walking distances and approximate time. I've been doing this since my first trip in 2001 and it works brilliantly. In fact, I've used this website for extensive research on a book of walking itineraries I'm currently finishing up! You may also click on the photos and "walk" down the streets. They have photos of practically every building excepting those areas that are private residences such as la Cour de Rohan (an interlocking series of 3 beautiful courtyard in the 6th arrondissement). It also gives you phone & fax numbers (always handy). There's also the "Vue aérienne" or "Vue 3D" functions to see aerial views of Paris (excellent for finding green space in Paris). And, of course, they have maps! This and cityvox's web page are the 2 best sources I've found for official websites. http://www.eng.cityvox.fr Or use http://ratp.fr/ to figure out time, walking time & distances with use of busses, metro & RER (regional train system).
