Medieval Walls by sunset_gal The medieval walls are a definite must-see. This was what protected the town from its enemies. It is possible to go up the walls. The view up there is beyond words! Better still, catch the sunset on the top of the walls or at the foot of it, where you can look across a huge field. It is a nice walk outside the perimeter of the walls, down tree-lined roads. Leave a Comment Address: ProvinsDirections: This is near the tourist office, but right across town, with the train station on the opposite side. From the train station, walk through the whole town in a northwest direction until you can go no further. You will see the walls then.Website: www.provins.net Other Contact: info@provins.net

by sunset_gal Tour Cesar was built in the beginning of the 12th century as a symbol of the Counts of Champagne's power. Once used as a lookout tower, it was also a prison and a money mint. The views from the top of the tower is nice, offering a 360 degrees view of Provins. Note though that the steps leading to the tower are very narrow. Adult: 3,40 euros Child (5 to 12 years): 1,90 euros Leave a Comment Address: Rue de La PieDirections: Turn left from main street Rue Saint Thibault at Place du Chatel. Make a U-turn down Rue du Palais. Turn on first right to Rue Desmarets. Rue de La Pie is on the left.Website: www.provins.net Other Contact: info@provins.net

still working... by Dariana A characteristic of houses in Provins are the lower rooms (les salles basse) with arcades and columns used as covered market during The Fairs of Champagne. La Grange is like a time machine. Visiting it you will be surrounded by the spirit of ancient times ;The large room with crossed-ribbed vaulting resting on capitals adorned with foliage it`s full of life : merchants selling their goods ,artisans working the wool ,the stone or leather, an ancient banker,a lady dressed a l`italienne. You can enjoy all this due to a very good audioquide Leave a Comment

Saint Quiriace in Provins by ExGuyParis Coinstruction on this church started in the 12th Century and was never finished. Various things got in the way: the 100 Years War, a fire, the decline of the Champagne Fairs that had brought people and economic power to Provins... A much bigger cathedral had been envisioned, with two bell towers, stretching out to where the metal cross appears in front of the existing church. The existing facade is rather unattractive; it was constructed with the idea of its being a temporary step. The unusual design of the church interior necessitated some spectacular vaults and arches. The current interior is, in one sense, a mish-mash of styles. On the other hand, there remain some incredible stone carvings. There is a touching statue of Jeanne d'Arc, who attended mass here. The term "collegiate" stems from the fact that a college of canons was associated with this church. The role of a canon is to sing; seven times each day, the canons would sing proaise to God. If you are lucky (as we were on our most recent visit), you will hear this tradition continue. Leave a Comment Directions: The church's zinc dome is a dominant landmark in the upper town.

Provins, visitors center by Martinewezel The Visitors Center is professional, American style. All brochures, offers and guided visits are in several languages. To have an idea of all the must sees in town: ask to switch on the introducing video show in the movie theatre before starting your visit. When leaving this place through the back door... it's like stepping out of a time machine. The ramparts are a few steps away. Also available in the visitors center's shop: souvenirs such as tiles, umbrellas, place mats, sweets an typical specialities of the region. Leave a Comment Address: Acces East of the Medieval town: large parking lotDirections: - Autoroute (Motorway) A4 (Paris - Metz/Strasbourg) Sortie (exit) n°13 " Serris", follow direction " Provins" along the road D 231.

mysterious inscription by Martinewezel The limy soil of Provins was a perfect dirth to scour the Medieval wool. So the whole town has been excavated underneath the existing house cellars. During history, the excavated galleries have been used for different purposes, such as hiding places, store rooms, dark gateries etc. Especially this last activity of course drew my attention. Strange inscriptions, names and mysterious words in Medieval handwriting brighten up the whole thing. Foresee a warm sweater. The caves are veeeery cold and humid. We were not allowed to take photograps in the galleries. I picked this one from the Provins Tourism site. Leave a Comment

The Italian Spice Merchant by ExGuyParis During the Middle Ages, Provins served as a center of European commerce. Inside the Grange aux Dimes you will learn about the European artisians who sold their wares at the Champagne Fairs. Wax figures represent the various trades and merchants that were found in Provins. A recorded history is available in several languages; the recording explains each craft and the various merchants and their wares. Leave a Comment Directions: In the Grange aux Dimes-- one of the first attractions you will find, on the left of the street you walk on to reach the center of the old town.

Entrance to Provins by ExGuyParis Make this your first stop. The Visitor Center is next to the main parking area at the entrance to the walled town. Pick up a map of the town so you will have a sense of the location of the attractions (Caesar's Tower, the Grange, the Underground tour, etc.). But in this town, even the "non-attractions" are beautiful. Simply stroll around, soak up the ambiance, appreciate the glory of this ancient place. Leave a Comment

Towering Provins by ExGuyParis This tower post-dates Caesar by hundreds of years. (Still, it is 800 years old, so it has a bit of history even though its name is misleading.) But legend has it that there was an older tower on the site. Climb up for awesome views. Leave a Comment Address: ProvinsDirections: Hard to miss: the tower is a strong presence in the Provins landscape!
