Poissy: Villa Savoye

by Elisabcn

What can I say about this house . . . visiting it made me remember why once I decided to become architect! As introduction I could say that the visit of this “machine à habiter” is a must for any architect or architecture lover. The villa was built between 1928 and 1931 as the weekend home of the Savoye family, a couple of bankers who gave the architect total freedom to express himself. With this villa Le Corbusier broke with traditional architecture and settled the five points of New Architecture: -stilts, creating a “box in the air” -roof gardens: the flat roof becomes a usable terrace where plants can be planted-open plan: thanks to reinforced concrete and stilts you can have huge free spaces-free-floating façade: free of the load-bearing structure architect is more free to design façades-horizontal window, thanks to non load bearing façades Another concept applied to this house is...

Provins: underground town

by Elisabcn

People say that in Provins there is the high town, the down town . . . and the underground town. And it is true because there are km and km of subterranean galleries, vaulted halls and even crypts! In Provins all houses have two parts: the upper part with its façade and the underground part consisted most of the times of a vaulted hall. The underground passages are mainly from the XIIIth century and they are so vast that have been divided into three categories: -the civil passages used for people’s communication or shelter-the military passages used as warehouses-as sheets and woollen clothes warehouses when Provins was an important centre of production of these goodsA fourth category has been recently discovered and it seems to be older than the other three ones and it is full of inscriptions and strange symbols of unknown meaning. Maybe these corridors were meeting places for strange...

Provins: town of Medieval Fairs

by Elisabcn

Provins is a smiling Medieval town 70km at the south east of Paris well known for its medieval fairs. It was the capital of the Counts of Champagne and thanks to their protection and it strategic position the town became one of the main places to do business in the Medieval Europe during the XIIth and XIIIth centuries. The urban layout was designed for this purpose and you still can see it. Also interesting are its fortifications which are 1200 metres long and have 22 towers. From the Tour César (XIIth century), for example, you will have gorgeous views over the town (pictures 2 and 3).Provins has 58 “buildings” registered on the French inventory of Historical Buildings so the town can keep you busy for a whole day or more. I enjoyed especially La Grange aux Dîmes a typical house-museum from the XIIIth century where different objects and mannequins show you how was life and customs in...

Auvers sur Oise: Musée de l'Absynthe

by Elisabcn

The story of this museum begins with the curiosity of a woman who found a “strange spoon” in a flea market. The seller told her about the absinthe, “that drink that makes people crazy!” A passion was born and she started to collect anything related with this drink. The absinthe was at the beginning a good health elixir but soon became a “pleasure drink” with many adepts. In Paris it was especially drunk in bourgeois cafés. This alcoholic drink (72º) , this “fée verte” (green fairy) became also the muse of some writers and artists like Rimbaud, Verlaine, Gauguin, Van Gogh or Toulouse Lautrec, who used to mix it with cognac calling this particular cocktail “des tremblements de terre!” :-))) During the absinthe’s height it was produced everywhere in France and any village had its own distillery. But later, when people discovered its consequences, it is crazy to see through all the...

Spend Nights at Moret-sur-Loing

by hquittner

Moret is an interesting and typical small French town with a number of sites to explore and restful atmosphere. There are modest but good stress freel accommodations, which makes it good base from which to use a car to visit Fontainbleau and Vaux-le-Vicomte which are nearby. We have enjoyed it and have several Tips on Moret.

At Ecouen Visit the Chateau & Renaissance Museum

by hquittner

The National Musee de la Renaissance is situated in the Chateau d'Ecouen. It is only 8 miles from Charles de Gaule Airport by the D104 (the Francilien). As a way to start a driving tour of Burgundy, and before jet-lag hit, we visited the Chateau and the museum which is installed in We spent two hours doing this and would have had lunch there as well before going onward (but this was long ago and the restaurant did not exist then). It can be easily accessed from Paris. Read our pages about it.

Provins Is a Walled Town Near Paris

by hquittner

Although Provins can be reached by rail from the Gare de l'Est in a little over 1 hour, we enjoyed itmuch more by staying there overnight (actually two nights). It is an easy drive from either de Gaulle or Orly Airports and makes for a fine place to unwind after a long flight or a last day/night before departing for home. There are many Tips about it under its site.

Visit the Palace at Fontainebleau

by hquittner

Fontainebleau town (pop.20K) is 60 km SE of Paris (Seine-et-Marne, #77). There are 3 ways to visit the Palace there: 1) by commercial tours from Paris, 2) independently by SCNF from the Gare de Lyon. They sell a combination ticket which includes round-trip and connecting bus through town to the chateau plus admission to chateau and grounds. 3) By car as part of a sightseeing tour outside of Paris. There are several places to stay in or near Fontainebleau. On one trip we chose a small hotel in the tiny town of Recloses, in the forest. We stayed 2 nights , giving opportunities to see the Forest and nearby sights like Vaux-le-Vicomte and towns like Melun and Nemours. When you visit the Palace be sure to get a free audioguide (1 1/2 hours duration).

Consider the Chateau de Malmaison

by hquittner

If you are a Napoleon enthusiast, this is an ideal adventure. f not, this is still a fine chateau to visit for it is meticulously furnished with authentic early 19C original pieces as Josephine (and Napoleon) actually placed them. It is readily reached by the RER (ligne A) to Grande Arche-Defense station, There you take Bus 258 to the "Chateau" stop. Do not go by RER to the Ruell-Malmaison stop as there is no bus to the Chateau, but only a 1 km walk.

Ways to Visit Versailles

by hquittner

The most visited site in the Ile-de-France after Paris and the Disney enterprise, is Versailles for its palace. Although commercial tours give easy and rapid access, you should visit the site slowly and in depth. (We have done so many times). You can reach it easily by RER and bring a museum pass to avoid the lines. We know people who have stayed in the town overnight (pop.>100K!) and visited when the crowd level was declining. We have arrived there in early morning by car after arriving at Orly airport, en route to our jet-lag night in Chartres (other towns in the Ile could also be used in this way).
