Sloooow Tourist Train.. by bpacker Arrgh, this is the last thing I would want to do. Pay €5 to sit on a slow-moving tourist train together with screaming kids and fat occupants to see the Trianon Gardens and Grand Canal.
Since the Grand Versailles Garden is too big to be covered by foot, it is best seen by bike ...
Rent a quaint bicycle ( €6 ) near the Grand Canal and ride through the gardens behind the Chateau . It'll be the highlight of your day, I assure you! Leave a Comment

Can somebody please tell me how to describe a tip about the Chateau of Versailles without leaving anything out, but also without getting too boring by just mentioning all those historical facts in the correct timeline. I'm sitting behing my computer right now and still haven't decided how this will work out, but will have a go at it. The Chateau is so huge and the history behind it is so important ... I hope I wont miss a thing and will keep you clustered at the screen while reading about it. The Chateau dates back till 1623 when Louis XIII built a hunting lodge, a little gentleman's chateau of brick, stone and slate at Versailles. During this period some extensions were deemed necessary and from 1668 untill 1670 the New Chateau developed itself. And finally in 1682 Versailles became the official residence of the Court of France, supplanting the palaces at the Louvre and Saint-Germain-en-Laye. At this period the Hall of Mirrors, Orangery, Stables and the Chapel Royal originate. Let's enter it ... Phone: 01 30 83 77 88 Address: Versailles, Yvelines Directions: As a part of the Chateau Versailles the entrance of the Chateau itself can be found at the right wing of this amazing castle, it’s the main entrance. Whilst the excellent gardens at Versailles are free, entrance prices to the Chateau are rather steep. You can buy passes covering the Hall of Mirriors, King's bedroom, and Queen's bedroom or separate tickets for each.
Go to the Hall of Mirrors
If you're travelling on a budget, skip the Chateau and explore the gardens. Leave a Comment

Beauty! by jgemini65 Is versailles a tourist trap? It is hard to decide? I am glad that I went but Wow was it crowded, expensive, and seemed to be a bit of a racket with the ticket prices!
Decide-do research-about what aspects of the monument you really want to see. Then take your time even when you are being shoved through the exhibits!
The city of Versailles might actually be nice...but I don't even know! Leave a Comment

A shot of park in summer by aliante1981 I've been there more than once, but only once I was disappointed. That was when I came to Versailles in early spring, when no greenery was there, the hedges that support it where bare and no fountains showed you the play of sparkling water... In summer, it looks all so different! Much more cheerful and inspiring!
At least go to the palace -- it's the same both in winter and summer. Leave a Comment

Rainy day in Versailles by aliante1981 Versailles in rainy weather turns into a somewhat depressing sight, and you miss out on the outdoor sightseeing - the park, I mean. Kind of takes part of the fun out of the trip...
If you are so unfortunate as to go to Versailles on a rainy day, at least take an umbrella:))
Go in late spring, to avoid both the largest crowds and the worst of heat. Leave a Comment
