Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: If you are going into the country to visit the Cathar sites, especially LasTours where the climb is significant and the trail rocky with loose material, I strongly suggest a sturdy set of hiking boots.

Luggage and bags: A day backpack for carrying water, jacket, souvenirs etc. If staying in centre of old city, avoid bringing a suitcase, as cars are generally not allowed in old city, and it may be difficult to lug a suitcase up the cobblestone streets, especially during middle of day when packed with day trippers.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Good sturdy walking shoes, as spend a lot of time on uneven cobblestones.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Suncream and sunglasses for summer. Got quite warm and sunny at end of August. Didn't see any pharmacies in old city, so to avoid a trip in to new city bring any medical/toiletry items you can imagine you might need.
Photo Equipment: Take lots of film or a big memory card, as there are photo opportunities galore.

Luggage and bags: French dictionary/phrase book, Carcassonne is not Paris, we thought French people don't like to speak English in Paris, we found out most French people in Carcassonne DO NOT speak English period. Locals are freindly, but it's such a frustrating feeling, when you could not understand a word of the nice multilingual conversations you are carrying on, hopefully it'll change, I am taking French class now.
I think one of the nice folks on the right of the pics, asked me if I want to join them for a game of croquet, but other then "Bonjour, Monsieur!" all I can do is smile. Talking about communications problem.

Miscellaneous: You need to be sure you have paper tissues with you at all times. Many public toilets do not provide paper. Enough said!
