The museum consists of one video room and one room with models of the 3 main stages of Carcassonne's existence (Roman settlement in the 3rd Century, the city in the year 1200 + during the siege of 1240). The short video is fantastic, as it summarises the French Middle Ages. I have seen a large number of videos on the Middle Ages, and this is certainly right up there with the best. The video includes small humerous sections, to keep kids interested. The room with models is also interesting. A voiceover tells you about each period in time. When a model of the city is being discussed it is lit up. When the large model of Carcassonne under siege is being discussed, the relevant section of the siege is lit up. All in all I felt it was value for money. The video helped me understand the progression of France during the Middle Ages. The models helped consolidate what I had learnt on the Chateau Comtal Tour. Entry for adults is E$5,00. Open 4th January to 23rd December from 10am to 7pm. Tours of the main residence, ramparts and towers are run from the Chateau Comtal, and are included in the entry price. These areas can only be accessed on one of the tours. The majority of the tours are in French or Spanish. A few tours are run in English, German and one or two in Italian. The tour is a must-see, so I would be heading to the Chateau Comtal first thing and checking out tour times. The tour takes you up on to the upper sections of the walls and inside some of the towers. The guide gives a run down of the history of Carcassonne and points out sections of the architecture relevant to different time periods. This really put everything in perspective. The tour runs from the courtyard of the Chateau Comtal, up on to the ramparts, past the 5 star hotel, and ends at the Cathedral (Basilique Saint Nazaire). If you haven't already seen the Chateau Comtal museum you can head back there with your entry ticket and they'll let you straight in. Entry for adults is E$6,10 for the Ramparts Tour and the Chateau Comtal Museum. I definately found it value for money. Leave a Comment Directions: Starts in the courtyard of the Chateau Comtal. When I was in Carcassonne in late August 2005 they were running 2 jousting tournaments each day on the weekend. I had so much fun I even went twice. Was so beautiful to see 'knights' and their horses fully decked out and competing with the old city walls as a backdrop. Medieval heaven!! The introduction was in French and English, and the rest of the presentation was in French. I didn't find this to be a problem, as it was pretty clear what was going on. Great fun for the kids. The presentation had a lot of humour and pageantry. Entry for adults was E$10,00. Leave a Comment Directions: There were posters throughout the old city. On the days the tournaments were running there were ladies giving out fliers at the main entrance. In Sep '05 it was held in the Lices Hautes, at the theatre end. Map is included with attached photos.

As you walk inside LaCite', there are many wonderful sights and sounds as it is a hub of acitivity. People actually live inside the city. One of the most must-see buildings is the BASILIQUE SAINT-NAZAIRE and dates from the 5th century. The south Rosette stained glass window comprises the weapons of the Pierre Bishop of Rochefort. A mass is celebrated every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Leave a Comment Address: 1 Rue Viollet-le-Duc 11000CarcassonnePhone: 04 68 11 70 77Website: www.carcassonne.org

The first thing you notice when you approach "LA CITE" is the impressive cemetery. I do love cemeteries, especially the ones in France. They build such beautiful monuments to their loved ones. Leave a Comment

Carcassonne is located 90 km ( 56 miles ) south- east of Toulouse, in the province of Languedoc-Roussillon. LA CITE' and its ramparts was built by the Romans and then taken over by Viscount Trencavel who ruled over Bas-Languedoc. Over the ages, it has been built and rebuilt and can now be savoured by the thousands of visitors who come to admire one of Europe's most complete example of a fortified medieval city. The Chateau Comtal Museum is fairly small, but has some very cool items from Carcassonne and surrounding areas, as well as a section on the restoration of Carcassonne. Entry for adults is E$6,10 for the Ramparts Tour, the Chateau Comtal Museum, and you are free to walk around the courtyard. I definately found it value for money. Charming Pizzeria\Creperie by LoriPori As you walk through La Cite' you will find many shops and restaurants to choose from. The accompanying picture is of a charming pizzeria\creperie I just couldn't resist taking a photo of. Hans, Wim and I did go out for dinner inside LaCite' but I didn't take pictures of them or remember where we ate. All I know is that it was quite an experience to sit in the town square, have a nice dinner, sip a glass of wine (French, of course) and enjoy the atmosphere and entertainment. Ah oui, Life is good. When I entered the church I was surprised at how large it was inside. The church has beautiful large stained glass windows. On the walls there are many old gravestones + stone tablets. Entry is free. Maps of the church outlining points of interest are available for a small donation. Photography is allowed. Leave a Comment Directions: Map is included with attached photos.

From the ramparts, there are many BEAUTIFUL VIEWS of the surrounding areas and the lower city. My Favourite view is behind the chateau at PORTE D'AUDE. It has to be the most photographed section of the ramparts. Leave a Comment Address: 1 Rue Viollet-le-Duc 11000CarcassonnePhone: 04 68 11 70 77
