I thought the city of Carcassone was a cross between "Medieval Times," and "Disneyland." However it was spectacular nonetheless, and I was told afterwards that the best time to visit is at night for dinner. That's when all the tourists, and tour buses have left the building. Photo to come.
The incredible Abbaye Fontfroide is just about 20 minutes away from Homps. Very beautiful and unusual tourist excursion. The tours are in French only, but the guide was very nice and tracked down a hard copy of the english translation. Very fascinating and worth the trip. Tours run about every 45 minutes and are about 7 euros per person.
Nice gift shop on the premises.
Visit the city of Narbonne for it's glorious cathedral and marvelous architecture. I was very impressed with Narbonne. It's a large city, but once you get into the old medieval section it is really lovely. Some of the oulying streets remind me of 18th century Paris. There is a market everyday in Narbonne that is held indoors that is quite interesting. Park along the canal in a self ticketed parking lot, and walk a few blocks into the old section. Otherwise parking can be very problemsome.
Fantastic medieval city about 30 minutes from homps. Very beautiful scenery and a fantastic 10th century abbey. You can go swimming in the river that runs through the town. Makes for a great day trip, and should not be missed if you're in the area. Spectacular views of the city as you enter the town.
The town of Minerve is just 20 minutes by car on pretty country roads. Nice town with some good restaurants and shops. Not too touristy and the locals are friendly. Great scenery as well. Makes for an easy day trip.
